Air groups on CVEs

Post by crsutton »

I have gotten most of my CVEs as reinforcments as the Allied player. Two of them come with three squadrons as default. (IIRC, ten wildcats, ten SBDs and 7 or 8 avengers). However, I have noticed that if you send them out with the default load of aircraft, the fighters will not fly CAP. I noticed my other CVE that has a different loadout (20 cats and about 9 sbds) is flying CAP normally as the fighters were showing normal fatigue. Yet the fighters assigned to CAP on the two CVEs with three squadrons CVEs are not flying CAP. I had to send the avengers squadrons assigned to the ships ashore before the fighters would fly CAP.

Is this a minor bug? You would think that CVEs would be able to operate normally with the default load of planes sent to the theater with the ship. I had not fiddled with the plane compliments at all but sent them out to see as received.

I've had a lot of problems with the squadrons associated with the CVEs as well. I normally convert the SBDs to land based units and just keep the fighters on board. I use them to escort landing forces where there is no airfield or to concentate a quick fighter force where there is one, but the squadrons behave very irratically. Planes go in and out of reserve at unpredictable times while on ship, but especially if you move them to land. Its aggravating to try to fly a CAP of 19 fighters and then suddenly have 9 go into reserve and have only 3 of the remaining 10 sortie. I've also had situations where half of a squadron upgrades from wildcats to hellcats and then refuses to share the same ship with its squadron-mates, leaving you no choice but to base half the squadron on another ship or on land.

i believe they have a operating capacity ( which is 16 on the LI for example ) but they can carry alot more ( 200 ). but if they have more planes then the operating rate they wont fly. cant find where i read that , still digging for it , but i believe thats what i read.
