Motorization and SU

Post by Teo41_ITA »

Hi everyone,

I hope this is the right section of the forum. I asked this already on Discord but I prefer to ask it here anyway.

One way to optimize the vehicle pool is not to attach non-motorized SU to motorized units, as the non-mot. SU will simply drain your pool. However, I just noticed that pretty much all HQ (Army Corps, Army, Army Group/Front) are motorized by default...

So, how do you micromanage your non-motorized SU? Because according to the suggestion above, I should simply get rid of all non-motorized SU (I'm thinking about my artillery battalions), as they will eat-up my vehicles as soon as I attach them to any HQ.

Thank you!

Short answer is you don't as it's probably not worth it. For example, Germans have pioneers with some motorised and some non-motorised but who could be bothered going through each of these and working out which ones to attach to motorised infantry/panzers. A shortcut would be to just attach pioneers to Infantry instead.

Axis SU's don't take up many trucks in any event so the main ways to reduce the impact on your truck pool are the obvious ones:
- Keep your units as close to deposits as possible. Truck losses on resupply are dependent on how many MPs they travel (terrain, weather, roads, admin movement, ZOC all impact)
- When you are far from your deposits or there is a shortage of supply locally, drop the supply priority on the units requesting supply. There's no use requesting supply that isn't there and your trucks will travel very far and will only die/lose a lot of supply to attrition anyway
- HQ supply priority is a big one. For example, if it's 41 and you're near Rostov, drop your Romanians to supply priority 1 so any supply goes to your better units. I spend most of 41 on supply priority 2 across the army with axis allies on 1. This changes if i have a surplus of supply at the front but that's unlikely in 41 if you're advancing quickly.
- TOE management. Some micromanage TOE's so any local supply goes into supply/fuel/ammo rather than replacements but i just do some high level adjustments. For example, it's a few turns before you plan to send Panzers to the TB/France for winter so why do you need them on 100% TOE? Lower them to 50% so they're less likely to request replacements.
- TB management. Axis can do a lot of awesome things with open TB. For example, when there's high combat intensity in North Africa but none in Italy, send your Italian moto units to Italy so there's lower truck attrition.

Doesn't directly answer your question but i hope that helps.
