Soviet Air reorganization

Post by CFab »

Hello everyone,

I've been playing Wite2 for some time now (against the AI). So far I've mainly focused on the ground phase, but I'm now trying to expand my game to the air phase. I've read a great AAR from M60A3TTS and his pearls post where he writes abour reorganizing the Soviet Air force and I've wachted a youtube series where the player almost only kept the MiG-3.

While I now understand how to reorganize and thanks to the pearl post I can see for most planes which are usefull and which ones not.

I''m still interested in learning more and I'm interested in your opinions about organizing the Soviet air forces. I'm also wondering the forces that you deploy in a distant (north caucasus) region to not participate in the war. Can you eventually replace their crappy planes with better ones? Or is there a way to redeploy pilots?

M60 always have really nice write-ups. It is unfortunate that many others don't contribute their expertise to the forum on posts like this too :)

I personally like the LAGG over the MIG. Although the LAGG gets shot down in droves the cannon does a wonderful job when it does hit. So for me it is LAGG, Yak, then MIG. Having said that in my current game I am experimenting with just Soviet New fighters on the map only. I am not saying this is the thing to do but my premise is to try and get kills without giving the Germans easy kills on obsolete models. At the same time keeping the bombers off the map except for some key IL2's in key places. Thus the Germans have to fight what the Soviets have as best(LAGG, Yak, and Mig) against well guarded IL2's(if the Soviets are capable of that). But yeah that is what I am doing in my current AAR after having ideas come up in my JB game.

Actually your comprehensive coverage of the front with AS missions did have a marked effect, particularly on my recon planes

Even the lowly I-15 / I-16 fighter bombers can do some damage in AS missions away from Axis fighters. But their best use in the early game is to protect trained pilots.

After the dust settles from the T1 airfield bombings the Soviet air force will often be left with 2000 or more I-series aircraft, with perhaps 1/2 as many trained pilots with experience level 55 or higher. These are worth saving, but if moved to the Reserve the pilots will be merged into the general pilot pool.

Instead, move them to the North Caucasus Air Command (NCAC) where they can be safely preserved until their planes are upgraded to modern types, either manually or automatically. In the example shown, 2/4 IAP has 68 pilots with 59 average experience. The pilots will be retained with the air group even when its maximum size is reduced to 20 on T12. Once upgraded, the abovementioned LaGG's, Yak's and MiG's will pack a more potent punch.

Pay attention to the Withdraw turn if shown, as 2/4 IAP gets disbanded on T12. But there are many other air groups that stay around longer.

I generally withdraw the obsolete air groups to the Reserve once they become Depleted, or the number of trained pilots drops below 20 with experience < 55.

Credit M60A3TTS once again for this valuable tip.
