Franco-Prussian War Alternate History

Post by Thoronir »

Hey guys,
I've reworked the french army from the Blood and Iron campaign to make it a more formidable force. I roughly based it on Napoleon III 1866 project in which he called for a standing army of approximately 600k soldiers, with as many in reserve in the Gardes Mobiles. Historically, Napoleon's reform was sabotaged in the Corps Législatif because mass conscription was very unpopular in France at the time. Because of this, France could only field about 200k soldiers by early august 1870. Far too few to stand up to Prussia.

This what-if scenario is based on 2 reasonable alterations:

- Marshal Niel, Napoleon's most able war minister, does not fall ill in 1869 and effectively mobilizes the army in 1870.
- A legislative compromise is secured in 1867 and a strong reserve of Gardes mobiles is available at the onset of the war to assist the regular professional army.

I have adjusted victory conditions to balance the scenario. France can only achieve a major victory by crushing Germany's FS or by occupying Coblenz. Germany only has to capture Metz, Strasbourg and Belfort to claim a major victory. I have left most events untouched since a German player will not need to venture far into France to succeed. I recommend playing this scenario on the hardest difficulty for the best experience, as it is quite easier overall playing the french side. Playing Germany should be much more challenging, especially capturing Paris. All in all, France will now receive slightly more troops than Germany but around half of them will be weaker Gardes Mobiles.

Let me know if the scenario is fun or if anything's broken!
