An example of very competent AI behaviour

Rule the Waves III is a simulation of naval ship design and construction, fleet management and naval warfare from 1890 to 1970. and will place you in the role of 'Grand Admiral' of a navy from the time when steam and iron dominated warship design up to the missile age.

An example of very competent AI behaviour

Post by EwaldvonKleist »

Having been critical of many AI behaviours/UI stuff, it is time to mention a very smart tactic that the AI had been using on me:
AI spawns with 6 modern BBs/BCs against my 25kn machinery upgraded 1899Bs which are now classified as BCs. While this looks like an easy win, the BCs were accompagnied by a dozen modern DDs with over 100torps, enough to severely damage or sink the pursuer.
I try to run to the next harbour and occasionally launch manually guided torpedo runs against the AI. But instead of a simple pursuit, it approaches into firing range at high speed, then randomly turns the ships around to fall back, and then repeats the process.
This way, I never get a clear shot for my DDs, and of the ca. 100 torps fired, only three hit. One by one, my BCs get engine hits, fall behind and are sunk.

3:0 for the AI in terms of heavy ships thanks to clever tactic. Well done!

(Yes, I could have charged the AI with my DDs. But I was a bit short on heavy fleet DDs and hoped that I can keep my BCs and my DDs with clever play-but the AI was cleverer).
