What an insulting thing to say on a wargaming forum. I am probably less of a soccer/football fan. No I am not English or French either, so that can't be used as an excuse. Maybe you are?rico21 wrote: Mon Dec 12, 2022 6:48 pmmaybe because you are not a wargame fanernieschwitz wrote: Mon Dec 12, 2022 5:23 pmTo be fair, the execution of the chances you get at scoring are as important as the ability to get those chances. Re: All things Football (soccer) related
Perhaps England's Harry Kane let out his inner Corinthian spirit:
Corinthian Football Club was an English amateur football club based in London between 1882 and 1939.
Above all, the club is credited with having popularised football around the world, having promoted sportsmanship and fair play, and having championed the ideals of amateurism.
The club was famed for its ethos of "sportsmanship, fair play, and playing for the love of the game". Corinthian Spirit, still understood as the highest standard of sportsmanship, is often associated with the side. This spirit was famously summed up in their attitude to penalties;
"As far as they were concerned, a gentleman would never commit a deliberate foul on an opponent. So, if a penalty was awarded against the Corinthians, their goalkeeper would stand aside, lean languidly on the goalpost and watch the ball being kicked into his own net. If the Corinthians themselves won a penalty, their captain took a short run-up and gave the ball a jolly good whack, chipping it over the crossbar."

Thank you Rico for your comments - I must finally try some TOTH scenarios.

Re: All things Football (soccer) related
The new season is about to begin, and as I am looking out at the snow, I wonder why even bother with it. Football is basically a complete crock. How such a simple, beautiful, thing as football can be turned into such a heap of incompetence, corruption, and worse eludes me.
That we have an national team that can not play competently (as a team) does not help.
Bah.
I hate football.

So, I wonder just what happened in New Zealand? I would post pictures
or make comments
but those might get me banned because of the players . . .

FIFA Women's World Cup
England begin their campaign today against Haiti. The England squad has been decimated by injuries since winning the Euros, but lets hope they can still get beyond the group stages and into the knock-out rounds at least.
Good luck England!!

I am trying to muster up some enthusiasm for the World Cup. Have not yet succeeded. And the time when the matches are played does not help.

I am enjoying these games a great deal. I have been pulling for Netherlands, Brazil, Australia, USA, and Denmark. These are all nations of my current gaming crew.
I have been most impressed with England, who seem to be giving a seminar. Their play seems a cut above.

Just watch them anyway or watch them when you can without looking at the results first. I am sure that you can find somethings to enjoy looking at . . .Orm wrote: Thu Aug 03, 2023 12:00 pm I am trying to muster up some enthusiasm for the World Cup. Have not yet succeeded. Re: All things Football (soccer) related
No, that is not going to do it.
Maybe watching USA vs Sweden will do the trick. Although, I am sure, it will be played at a time when it is hard to catch the match. Although, time difference might not be as bad as they moved to Australia now.

Well that was absolute daylight robbery.....
Nigeria can consider themselves pretty unlucky
.
England 0-0 Nigeria
England win 4-2 on pens
If it's any consolation Nigeria, England men know all about this way to lose......

A sad day for Tottenham Hotspur fans everywhere
Goodbye Harry Kane (but hopefully not forever) and best wishes for your new career in Germany. Hopefully you will gain the trophies you deserve, playing in a quality team (shame its Bayern
but I will have to put my liking for Dortmund on hold for a while).
Harry, you are a world class footballer, a club legend, an England legend, and a family man and a gentleman.
Thank you for all you’ve given Spurs.

Well done Australia - so pleased the home nation got through.
Who will they play in the semi?
Colombia or England.......
If England play as they have done so far then its Colombia’s for the taking - but surely England can’t play as badly againcan they?......... nerves are a jangling.

.....and so its those best of sporting friends
- Australia vs England - in the second semi-final for the right to play Spain or Sweden.
Lots of “Colombians” in the crowd with Aussie accents
and would have expected nothing less as the Sydney crowd made their desired outcome known throughout the match.
England were a bit better, but still well short of what will be required to beat any of the remaining three countries. And England will be all too aware that it was Australia that dished out their first defeat under Serena Wiegman. In sport, you never under-estimate the Aussies.
Australia vs England will not be for the feint hearted......

And so it's the big one!! The next installment in England vs Australia sporting rivalry.
At 11 am (UK time) for the right to play Spain in the World Cup Final its:
Australia (Matildas) vs England (Lionesses)
England will be up against it - with some of their best players missing, a poor run of form this tournament a partisan Aussie crowd, and an Aussie team raring to go - this will be a nerve shredder I'm sure.....
