Does training affect pilots in a unit's reserve?

Post by majorlee1967 »

Say you have an air unit set to train for ASW. There are 10 planes and 12 pilots. If training patrol level is set to 80 this means 8 planes fly that day and 4 pilots rest. Correct so far? On the next day will the same 8 pilots train or will 4 of the 8 from the previous day fly, the other 4 rest, and the 4 in reserve get their turn at training? In effect each pilot trains for 2 days and takes a day rest before training another 2 days?

I have searched the forum, manual and even Reddit and can't find anything about this. TIA

It may not rotate the pilots every day - the pilots normally have to reach a threshold of fatigue to be stood down. But the AI trainer will not let them get too tired, so don't worry about that. Generally, for a training mission the pilots who have the lowest level in that skill are selected for training. It is the reverse for a combat mission with the most Experienced pilots flying if they can. You can micro manage training by putting individual pilots in the Squadron Reserve pool (not the General Reserve) but this is very time consuming. I find the AI does just fine if I set the type of training at 100% and let it do its thing. One caveat: if the training is taking place near the front lines and I want to keep some pilots and aircraft ready to fly combat missions, I set the training to around 60%. Example for a Recon mission: I know only two pilots will fly each day, one in the AM and one in the PM. So if I have 12 aircraft I look at the aircraft fatigue and count the number with more than 10 fatigue. I set that % to rest, leave 20% for the mission and set the remainder to train.

Note: if you select "General Training", it is random because the AI will train each pilot in their poorest skill. Why do that? Well if the primary skills are already up to 70 but the Experience remains low (below 50), the fastest way to train Experience (without sending them on combat missions like CAP) is to do General Training. Experience is an accumulation of skills as much as combat in one or two skills.

Check to see who trains by looking at their fatigue, whether or not any skill numbers are green which means that they have just gained, if the skill numbers are orange that means that the skills increased in the past month.

If you want certain pilots NOT to train put them on Group Reserve which means that the other pilots are available for training. Usually (but not always) the pilots with the lowest skill will train or at least will train more. Having higher skilled pilots seems to help the lower skilled pilots increase their skills faster because it raises the unit average.

Not all training is flying, there is ground school and identification of air/naval targets.

I have had American torpedo bombers on ASW search also bomb enemy ships that they found.

A small correction RJ - past month training is not displayed in orange - that is for training in the current month. At the first of the month there will be no orange shown for skills training.

As I am laying on a bed, I lay corrected!

Thanks, gents. Good to know you can train at 100 without worrying about fatigue in safe locations.
