I have too many generals and cannot see my troops in fleets

I feel I have way too many leaders (and this case: generals). I let my advisors/the AI auto assign them and now I can't figure any way to determine what troops are on some of my fleets. I guess I can manually assign generals but (again) I simply have too many and if I fire them, I end up recruiting more.
