Hex radius tool

Post by Searry »

It's really difficult to count hexes for missile launchers and airbases so a hex radius tool would help a lot.
How I would do it is you click on a hex, click on the radius button whereever it is in the UI and then you would type how many hexes you want highlighted and then it would highlight the hexes in the radius you typed.

I agree the game would benefit from distance measuring tools. They probably weren't necessary before the addition of air forces, but since then, SAMs and air units have really important ranges. When planning air missions it's important to know the coverage of enemy SAMs, and when protecting your forces it's important to know they're in range of your own SAMs.

And in some cases it's really useful information to know if some area is out of range of enemy bombers, which can mean manually counting 33 hexes, maybe several times. Same for planning the locations of your own airbases.

And let's not forget the important "free AP" distances the game has for logistical assets.

Inputting the range might be hard to implement in the UI, but:
  1. A general ruler tool would be useful. Click a hex and then by moving your mouse it would display the distance to that hex. Maybe easiest to implement.
  2. A map mode that, if enabled, would display the range of the selected unit. So if you clicked an artillery unit it would display its ranged attack range, if a SAM its AA range, and if an air unit its operational range. If there were multiple ranged subunits in the unit, it could show the longest distance.
  3. For extra helpful functionality, when this map mode is toggled on and you select your own air unit, it could paint the ranges of all known enemy AA units on the map. And perhaps when you click an enemy air unit, all ranges of your own AA.

So, I'm thinking you select a hex, hold the Ctrl key down, then as you move the mouse over hexes it displays the range. Further, it highlights in translucent white every(!) hex in every direction at that range from the selected hex.

So, I'm thinking you click into the Strategic Map, select a "Range Mode" and it displays color-coded circles around every known, ranged unit, the radius of the circle being the range. Maybe there are sub-modes: only enemy units, only air units, only SAM, only artillery, whatever.
