As a follow-up to Fleets’ tankers retrofit while at war (see https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/view ... 6&t=397514), I just want to let you know that even with v1.1.6.8, the tankers still retrofit at the worst possible moment (the game was started before v1.1.6.8; pretty sure it was with v1.1.6.5).

In this case, my Strike Force 3 fleet is pretty deep in enemy territory, doing very good work. But its destroyers are low on fuel. It’s not critical yet (they have good fuel tanks), but I wanted to refuel them before continuing their rampage. So I went to check what was happeing with their tanker, and discovered that it was retrofiting!!! While in a raging war with the Dhayuts and while the fleet is deep in enemy territory!!! :evil:

The fleet is on manual, and the tanker is on auto. But no matter what mode it’s in, a tanker should NEVER retrofit while a fleet is in enemy territory, UNLESS manually given an order to do so.

I think until that’s fixed so the automation can evaluate "correctly”, by itself, whether it’s OK or not to retrofit a fleet's tanker(s) at a given point in time, I believe implement the following two things would help a lot:
  • A policy that would allow to specify how we want the retrofit of automated tankers in a fleet to be handled (see below for more details).
  • A new tactical setting that would allow to override "locally" the above policy, at the fleet level and/or at the tanker level (just like it’s possible to override "locally" a ship design's tactical settings once it’s built).

If it were possible to specify retrofit paths based on the design rather than on the hull, there could be a third option that would allow to workaround the fleet tanker retrofit problem. It would then be possible to design two tankers: one for fleets, and one for not-in-fleet tanker. And then, for the fleet tankers, to specify “Manual” in the “Retrofit” column in the “Designs” screen. So that fleet in tankers would never retrofit automatically, even if automated, while out-of-fleet tankers could be left on automatic retrofit. Alas, it is not currently possible...

By the way, that’s just one of the gazillion ways design-based retrofit paths would be useful in the game. But I digress... ;)

Regarding the policy for the tankers’ retrofit, I believed it should offer the 4 "standard" options (say, like those for “Ship Construction”):

* Automated [retrofits]
* Suggest [retrofit] and Execute
* Suggest [retrofit]
* Manual

If set to “Suggest”, the game would propose a retrofit of the fleet’s tankers. If the player clicks “No”, or ignore the message, than the tanker(s) wouldn’t retrofit but stay automated (if it already was), and the game wouldn't ask again until the war is finished.

And if set to “Manual”, the fleet tanker(s) would never retrofit by themselves, even if automated.

Thanks for the report! We're still working on improving fleet and fuel tanker behavior, though we do hope that 1168 has moved things in a positive direction.
