To build or not to build...that is the question

Post by Vanman »

Well, things seem a little dull here. I don't know if its a situation where there is 'nothing new under the sun' or if interest is waning a bit. Decided to throw some questions out to see what other peoples thoughts are in terms of buying certain units.

CVL --> ever worth buying?

Air Transports --> I find I just don't bother buying them, am I being foolish?

China --> After Infantry/HQ units, what do you tend to buy as the next priority? Fighters? Artillery?

Gibralter --> Is it worth it to buy a fortress to protect the entry from Spain?

US Subs --> Buying a few subs early to put into the Japanese rear in 41' 42', to keep them slightly off balance and distracted useful?

Japanese Armor --> Do you buy in 39' or 40' or pass knowing your higher quality infantry will get the job done?

Territorials --> Hmm.

Sunderlands vs Swordfish (expensive long range with small naval air factors vs cheaper, low range but high naval air factors). Which would you prioritize?

Your favourite 'specialized units' --> Anti-Air, Anti-Tank, Artillery and Engineers. Which do you tend to prioritize and in what order?

What I build depends a lot on what MP I play, and what my grand strategy is.

CVL, I always build them with USA. Not so much with other powers.

ATR is always build with USA, and sometimes with the other MPs. I really like them with USSR but are hard pressed to afford them. The Soviet land bombers with ATR capability is a must for me.

I like to think that a fort in Gibraltar is worth the cost if Axis go for it. However, the trick is into guessing it right since it takes a long time to arrive. Having Germany risk their precious ENG at Gibraltar is definitely worth the cost of a fort.

Having a few SUBs early so that Japan can not use all its forces offensively without taking risks at their rear is a good thing.

Like to build the Japanese panzers early, and find that I do so in about half my games. They are awfully expensive for Japan with all their other demands.

Territorials depend a lot on what MP I am. As CW I never used to build them, but now I had a change of mind and build a few of them fairly early. As France I never build them. As Free France I might depending on what I risk getting. VF never builds them. With the remaining MPs I tend to build the TERR that I have, although Italy might not afford it.

I usually build the cheaper NAV2, and wait for the economy to improve before building the Sunderlands. However, if Axis seem to go heavily after the Atlantic then I might re-prioritize.

Specialized units depends on MP. ENG as Germany, MAR as USA. AA as USSR. AT as France.

I only digress from Orm's suggestions with regards to Japan. I like to build only the Mech Div so I can have the option to call the table when attacking some hexes in China.

Air transports. I like to build an Italian one, for the German Para. The longer range makes this a very nice investment.

China: both ART. Those are very very good to have, because it gives the Chinese at least the possibility of ground striking Japanese units on the frontlines.

Japan: MECH or ARM division only. And I also build all TERR with Japan.

CW: Sunderlands or NAV2. Depends on what Germany and Italy are building. If there are a lot of SUB's being build, the Sunderlands get priority (especially if the optional rule is in play which gives them extra search modifiers for the longer range).

Specialized units? Well, I like artillery units. And with the French, I will build AT and AA guns, since they give better defense against the German ARM.

I really like building the artillery units. As many as I can afford.

France - it allows you to pull off a ground strike that can totally disrupt the german offensive.

CW - Much harder to find the BPs for, but if you have it they can be useful when trying to re-take Gibraltar for instance and when you just don't have enough air missions to ground strike in 1944+

USA - So useful when you are short of air missions. Especially when grinding through walls of axis troops when trying to advance in Europe

USSR - You end up so short of air missions that the extra ground strikes can really help

Germany - They can be useful when trying to take Gibraltar and can be helpful in the East when short of air missions.

Italy - I have a hard time affording them

Japan - so helpful in China. They can spoil any chinese offensive, or provide the needed boost when attacking.
