Error in CV formations

I have this carrier group on "line ahead" formation, but somehow each carrier is wandering around 10-15 nm from the others, while the "screening" DD divisions are all clustered in the center. Who's protecting who?

Have they been this scattered for some time or is this at the start of the battle?

You're right, looking back they were this way from the beginning. The AI had them set up in "screen" formation, which is not permitted for CVs but anyway. I think when I was setting up, I tried to change their formation, got an error message but it was locked because your controls are locked at the beginning of battle (another thing I find really frustrating about this game btw), and then I took the thought for the deed and never went back and fixed it once the game returned control to me.
