Torpedo attacks.

Rule the Waves III is a simulation of naval ship design and construction, fleet management and naval warfare from 1890 to 1970. and will place you in the role of 'Grand Admiral' of a navy from the time when steam and iron dominated warship design up to the missile age.

Torpedo attacks.

Post by stormbringer3 »

When Destroyers get the longer-range torpedoes, they just clobber my ships. They can launch from so far away my secondary and tertiary guns have little effect. My Destroyers on screen are too close in. Any thoughts about how to cope with those attacks would be greatly appreciated.

Regular turns away (or directly towards) the DDs as they launch. You can tell when they are launching when they turn parallel to your formation. Then you click "turn together", set a course either directly towards or directly away from the enemy torpedo launchers, go for about two minutes, then return to your previous course.

You might still get hit occasionally, and this does disrupt your concentrated fire, which is the point of doing this, but you will rarely lose a ship this way.

Higher torpedo protection levels help too.

You'll find that if you actually want to kill enemy ships with your own torpedoes, you will need to get within 1000 yards or closer, mostly only possible at night or against crippled enemy ships separated from their main force. Mostly the torpedo attacks you will make during battle are just about getting the enemy to maneuver and break up his fire concentration; if you try to close to killing distance during the day you will get a bunch of DDs killed. You'll notice that the AI will change course at the drop of a hat.

When you're within gun range, I hope you switch to the 'spacebar' to advance one minute at a time, rather than continuous play - this makes it much easier to spot torpedo attacks forming up.

Once you get used to the game, you'll see them forming up more easily - and you can disrupt them by altering course by 10 or 20 degrees away from their formation to start with.

Once they actually start their manoeuvre, watch them carefully and add a small turn away from the DD formation every turn or two. Torpedoes are in the water when the DDs execute a sharp turn away from your formation.

If they come in really close to launch, you're probably going to get hit as you'll be reliant on your captains evading the torpedoes, but a long range launch is much easier to avoid with a 90-degree or higher turn; indeed, I'll make it a 360 degree turn which has the disadvantage of completely screwing with my formation but typically ensures all those torpedoes stream gaily past me.

If the enemy tries a torpedo attack on your ships you move away with line abreast. It's pretty rare to get hit by enemy torpedoes except in night fighting and by torpedo bombers.
