Eastern Front
Situation Report August 5th 1943 Turn 38
Army Group North

18th Armee finally closes the trap on the remnants of The Volkhov Front, while some enemy units escaped the vast majority withdrew into there fortresses, the enemy keeps sending piecemeal reinforcements hoping to force there way through to there besieged comrades only to find themselves isolated and then surrounded, our forces capture Cherepovets as enemy units from the Soviet 8th Army attempt to retake the city. Rain continues to fall in the leningrad / Vologda regions making a already advance through swampland's more difficult.

Eastern Front
Situation Report August 5th 1943 Turn 38
Army Group Centre

The Soviets launch fresh attacks and Istra falls again, 3rd Pz Armee and 9th Armee are forced to give ground as The Northwestern Front throws every available unit into battle, despite repeated assaults XXXIX Pz Korps ( 9th Armee ) holds Klin as Soviet armour masses close to the town.
On the Southern flank of Moscow The Red Army opens up new attacks, Kolomna is taken by Guards units which strike at 4th Armee positions, some better news at Gorlovo where 3rd Pz Armee and 2nd Armee units destroy a trapped Tank Corps.
The Soviet offensive struck at a critical time as High Command decided to transfer 2nd Pz Armee HQ to The Balkans forcing a reorganisation of Army Group Centres formation structure, the brief confusion in Command organisation allowed the enemy to take advantage.

AGC 38.jpg
AGC 38.jpg (1.04 MiB) Viewed 1167 times
Further South of the Moscow battle the withdrawal also causes confusion to the situation as some of our front line units were withdrawn leaving a large area of the front line open, the enemy also took the opportunity to launch assaults to relieve there besieged comrades at Voronezh, the relief attempt failed but forced 7th Panzer Division to halt its own attack on the city and forced Command to redeploy troops already trying to hold a thinly stretched front line to contain the enemy attacks.
There are now huge gaps in our line between 3rd Pz Armee units and 2nd Armee which the enemy could exploit, with The Voronezh Front massing more troops for what appears to be a major offensive, the fear from Commanders in the field is The Bryansk Front could sweep forward in the Lipetsk area and cut off there supply lines.

In the Belgorod area heavy tank battles erupt as 3rd Guards Army and 27th Army ( Steppe Front ) clash with Hun 2nd Army and 2nd Armee for control of the towns of Stary oskol, Olshanka, Novy Oskol and Volokonovka on the Oksol river, The Red Army committing 4 tank Corps into the fight. The towns being part of a major rail network running from Tula in the North to Stalino in the Don Bass region, controlling this line would be vital for Axis North / South supply lines and troop redeployment's.

Operation Fischreiher : The Don Offensive

For almost 5 months Axis and Soviet forces have been engaged in major actions across the entire front, from Leningrad to Baku, with some of the heaviest fighting at Moscow, Orel, Kursk, Kharkov and Voroshilovgrad in the central sector, in the South where major battles unfolded in the kuban region, The Caucasus and Stavropol as 1st Pz Armee and 6th Armee battled against repeated Soviet offensives.
While fighting had be taking place on both flanks, Gen Hermann Hoth's troops had remained on the defensive his Armee dug in along the Don and Sal rivers had seen little action apart from Gen Schlemmer's Pz Korps and the 62nd Infantry Div at Voroshilovgrad.
Rail and road bridges had been destroyed as our forces fell back from Stalingrad during the Red Army's offensive to force Army Group B back into The Ukraine and cut off Army Group A in The Caucasus, now infrastructure needed time to be repaired, rail lines made operational so supplies and munitions could be brought to forward supply depots and the Armee needed to be built back up to full strength.
On the 4th of August The Soviets launch an Air and artillery barrage on the 62nd Infantry Divisions lines as a prelude to a Soviet offensive by Southwestern Front's 40th and 51st Army's planned for the 5th.

German Intelligence intercepted radio traffic warning of Soviet intentions, forewarned Hoth launches his own offensive and 4th Pz Armee strikes first, the Soviets are taken completely by surprise, Schlemmer's XXXXVIII Pz Korps on the right flank crossing the Sal River and capturing Martynovskoe followed by Inf of XXXXII ArmeeKorps ( Gollnick ), the Panzers then crossed The Don, on the left flank III LW Korps (Odebrecht ) and XXIX Armeekorps ( Obstfelder ) crossing at several places along the Don River, both arms of the pincer movement closing the trap on Southwestern Front at Konstantinovsky.

As 1st Pz Armee regroups its forces at Grozny for a Northward push the Rom 3rd Army is sent to take up positions around the oil producing centre and to cover the left flank of the Pz Armee as it prepares to advance into the Daghestan region.
Enemy forces are thin here and as the Red Army moves its troops to counter our push the thinly spread out enemy forces are easily isolated and overwhelmed.

Italian Front
Situation Report August 7th 1943 Turn 6
Army Group C

The situation on Sicily remains tense once again Axis forces came under heavy attack, Termini was evacuated by Italian forces however the enemy chose not to capture the town instead focusing there attacks towards the town of Cefalu, Gen Hube's Pz Korps initially contained the enemy attacks and all seemed that the situation was stable, however the US 7th Army and Brit 8th Army assaulted ours lines with a series of armoured attacks forcing XIV Pz Korps back, the Ital XII Corps collapsed with no support on its left flank.
LXXXX ArmeeKorps manage to hold the right flank of our defensive line under heavy pressure from the Brit XIII Corps, 10th Panzer Div crossed on Sicily but was unable to reach the battle zones, the unit is some 40 miles behind the front line.

More bad news for our beleaguered defenders Abwehr ( German Military Intelligence ) has learned that the US 5th Army has landed in Sicily, with our forces barely holding the line this news could not come at a worse time.

You can keep Italy in the game but it is incredibly hard, there are 3 ways Italy will surrender.

1. If the Allies capture all of Sicily there is a surrender check on the first turn after.

Now the Germans could hold out in Sicily which would avoid the surrender check, however.

2. if the Allies capture either Sardinia and or Corsica there is also a surrender check

Holding both those islands is incredibly hard.

3. If the Allies land on the Italian mainland and secure a hex that is " IN SUPPLY " there is a surrender check.

Driving the Allies off the Italian mainland would not be easy also.

Any one of those 3 options will cause Italy to surrender, while its not impossible, its a enormous task to hold part of Sicily, repel the invasion of Sardinia / Corsica and mainland Italy and if I managed to drive the Allies into the sea at Sardinia / Corsica and Italy the AI would simply regroup and try again.

I have read AAR's on the WITW forum where players have managed to keep Italy in the was as the Axis till late 1944, I believe one player actually managed to keep Italy from surrendering all together.

I intend to try and forestall an Italian surrender for as long as possible, the longer they remain Axis the better for me, but i cant see myself holding the surrender off for the entire campaign, I'm not that good of a player, not even against the AI.

Enemy Air activity was not as high this week but still The French Capital was still subjected to large scale sorties by the enemy, also the RAF conducted operations in Belgium.

At Cologne a massive air battle took place as I Jagd Corps ( Generalleutnant Josef Kammhuber ) with over 300 heavy fighters engaged an enemy bomber force of equal strength.
Though there were few planes lost by the enemy the raid on the city was disrupted with only slight damage inflicted.
