Abusing rules: rebasing planes through sea areas

Post by Courtenay »

The RAW allow some abuse of the rules. One that I frequently use is to fly a short range plane from Gibraltar to the W. Med., and then land it on Malta at the end of the turn. From Malta, it can fly to the E. Med., and then to Egypt. One can also go between Aden to Egypt. What I visualize happening here is that the British have some tame dragons (have you seen the Welsh flag?) that grab the planes with their claws and fly them to their destination. The planes certainly don't have enough range to make those hops with their own engines, so, dragons.

Do others do this? Should there be a house rule preventing it?

I have seen it made every time the owner sees it fit. Nobody questions it, it has became normal, no matter that in truth it makes no sense, but the game is not an absolute simulator of every ability of the units.

However this "rebase" after deployed at sea issue is very unfrequent in my experience. To do what you say ,planes have to be in Gibraltar first, which means a TRS, and usually the TRS itself can take them to Malta or N Africa (if no enemy opposition or strongly escorted).

It's strange, but it's not totally unrealistic. What happened a lot that airframes were put on board of cargo ships and shipped overseas. Land lease to Russia for example.

So I'm not totally against the way one can rebase short range planes this way at all...

WiF already allows you to put planes on TRS and ship them overseas. That is fine. This exploit allows you to transfer planes to places you can't reach when you don't have TRS available.

How do you think the land lease planes were transported to the USSR? Not on transports.

Historically speaking, the CW air force in Egypt was transported to the area using normal merchantmen. Not with troop transports.

So again: I see no problem with using short range aircraft this way. Sure, it looks gamey, but to me, it isn't.
