Surface search

Post by Kobu »

While testing stealth corvettes with anti-surface missiles I have encountered a problem.

Testing at what ranges they are detected, I have seen that maritime patrol aircraft such as the P-3, P-8 usually detect them at about 20NM, which makes them a valuable and useful asset.

Then I used an E-2C and to my surprise it detected them at 189NM with a more outdated radar than the previous ones.

The problem is that in the database these stealth Corvettes in the radar signature have different values for the A-D bands (E-2C radar) and for the E-M bands (P-8 and P-3 radars) while the others Ships that do not have these stealth characteristics have the same values for both bands.

The simulator acts accordingly and hence the data disparity in range detection.

I don't really know how to resolve this but I don't think this disparity in ranges between aircraft dedicated exclusively to maritime surveillance and other types of aircraft is realistic.

I don't know if the solution would be to equalize the values of both radar bands to the lowest value to maintain the stealth characteristics of these ships.

In airplanes it is more successful since radars operating in bands A-D, despite having an advantage in range, the detected target will always have an area of uncertainty around it that makes it difficult to use weapons against those targets.

I am attaching a save in case anyone wants to do quick tests.

Thoughts???

That when radar was invented, future anti stealth technology was 'accidentally' invented.

Seriously though (although that one liner is actually true) Stealth is about reducing signatures, but it cant be all things in all radar bands. CMO uses very coarse signature bands, but nonetheless this reflects real life sufficient for the sim to work.

The reality is that an India Band Surface Search radar will have a low probability of detection of an optimised platform than say a Hawkeye Radar operating in high B band...
