Torpedo Attempt Retargeting

Just playing through some of the sub training scenarios and note in Submarine Tutorial 1.1 that I have had a couple of torpedoes that missed the target and, as detailed, entered a circular sweep to reacquire a target. The first reacquired quickly and struck the target but the second time this happened it has been searching for over 20 mins. even though it has repeated swept the target ship. Does anyone have any details on what determines whether a torpedo reacquires a target or advice on what to do when a torpedo goes rogue? TIA.
