Help Please?

Post by JudgeDredd »

I've had this game for awhile now, but I've hardly played it because I don't know how to.

The Manual that came in the case is fine - for the tutorial - but it doesn't show you the vast majority of what you need to know and the manual that comes in PDF isn't much better.

Can someone please point me to some sort of help resource?

In particular, I can't understand, really, where to start. I mean, should I be massing troops at a port, loading them onto transports and attacking bases somewhere?! How do I know the value (strategically) of a base?

Thx

I suggest that you read some of the after action reports - there you will get a bigger picture of strategies and tactics. There is also a FAQ on this site that's very usefull!
UV might seem like a complex game before you get the hang of it, and moving into completely unknown territory can indeed be daunting.

Scenario 1 is all about learning you the basics of the game; Take controll of either Japan or the Allies and try to send your carriers into the Coral Sea to do battle with the
opponent. Save the game as you proceed, and examine all the resources you got available. After a while it should all click into place [:)]

Japans main bases are Truk - most of the reinforcements arrive here - while Rabaul is the second most important base followed by Shortland.
The Allies receive all their ships in Noumea, while air/land units arrives both at Noumea and Brisbane. You wish to hang on to these bases..... The bases in Australia + Port Moresby, Port Efate and Luganville comes next.

The big clash of arms often takes place on Lunga or Port Moresby at first, and then if successfull the Japanese player will move on to try and occupy some of the bases I mentioned above.

Just don't give up, UV is absolutely worth your time even though the learning curve can be a little steep in the beginning.
I had the game lying around for quite some time before I really got going with it, I frequently visited the forums and picked up nit bits of info now and then.

Not much, but I hope it helps a little!

thx PzB - I'll scout about. Since writing the post, I've found one or two posts in the War Room forum that helped some - I was hoping there was an "amalgamated" help file somewhere...

Thx anyways

JudgeDredd, When I first got this game I felt the same as you. I had no idea what I should be doing, where to defend or where to attack. So confused was I that I shelved the game. Many months later I tried the game again, and just started playing the ai, getting my butt kicked more often than not. But by getting my butt kicked I started to learn what strategies to use. And let me tell you, once you get the hang of tactics and strategies, you are going to love this game.

PzB offered some good tips, read some aar's. Even if you just read the first few months of game time, I think you will be able "feel out" the rest.

Enjoy, and don't worry about getting your butt kicked by the ai, I think it's a great way to get a feel for the flow of the game. Just remember not to immitate the ai, because it is not that smart in the broader sense of the game.

No, there is no good manual on the nuts and bolts of the game and that is a shame. I pretty much learned how to play by reading the posts on this forum for over a year or so. 80% of my knowledge came from other players. Unfortunately, many of the veteran players are not working on WITP and do not post here as much. But there are enough. Don't be afraid to ask questions here. And, play humans, not the AI.

Go here and check out the tactics and frequently asked questions
link, there is tons of info and ad ons at this site. (spookys uncommon valor site)

Play a Pbem game with a human apponant and get your butt kicked a few times
like I have been for the last 3 months. ( It will be far more enjoyable)
but I also use the AI for testing situations. [8D]

I meant to say the many of the veteran players are now working on WITP.

Judge,

I've been playing the AI for awhile as most getting my butt handed to me every engagement [:@], but things are changing. After I figured out the easy stuff like how to create transports with troops, which troops to load, how to supply them, etc. it became easier. What helped me when I first started playing, was to read what the objectives of the game were and try to figure out a how to go about occomplishing those objectives. Helped me to stay focused.

I'm sure that when I start to play others that will change because of the unknown. As i've read other posts, some try knockout punches, massed assaults, etc... Striking at bases the AI doesn't.

Stay with it. Keep reading the posts. [:)]

What are you doing with a picture of my old ship as your avatar? Did you serve on the Adams, and if so, when? I was on board from Dec. 69 till Mar. 73.
