Otranto Barrage Etc.

Post by thedoctorking »

A line of British/Italian/American/French "drifters", supported by DDs and CLs, tried to block the Otranto Straits leading from the Adriatic into the larger Mediterranean during 1914-1918. They were ineffective against subs but did interfere with surface ship movement. There were several battles between Austro-Hungarian raiders and the blockade. Drifters were small AMCs with a deck gun and depth charge racks, similar to small corvettes in game terms. The British had similar blockade ships across the Straits of Gibraltar, the English Channel, and in the Norwegian Sea during both WW1 and WW2. Maybe this could be the setting for a type of battle where one country is trying to move through one of these choke points. Where the location is predictable, there might be more of a role for coastal artillery to play too.
