Command Range Modifier 15.5.4

Post by Champagne »

I'm confused by this rule. It seems to say that the Range for a subordinate HQ to benefit from higher-level Leaders on various die rolls is LESS THAN the full "Stay in Command" range.

In other words, your German Army HQ is in Command Range of the Army Group HQ. HOWEVER, it is OUT of range for the purpose of benefitting from the Army Group Commanders awesome Leadership Admin influence.

For example, 18th German Army can be 45 hexes away from AGN and still be "in Command", right? However, to benefit from the AGN HQ Commander's awesome Admin rating, that 18th Army HQ is OUT of range. Is this correct? Is 20 hexes the range for benefitting from the awesome AGN HQ Commander's Admin Rating? I don't know.

Also, if that is correct, then, where is the EXACT range number listed for the HQs? Rule 15.5.4 has a table of formulae that serves as a tool to calculate the exact range, but, I'm bad at Math, so, are the exact ranges listed somewhere?

Thanks!

Yes, you're correct. Even at 45/45, the 18th Army HQ is considered out of range. Still, the effect of being out of range on the probability of passing leader checks is very small.

I did a tutorial about this quite some time ago:

Thank you. I have watched your video, and I just would like to ask this follow up question to gain complete understanding.

For the German Army, Are these the true Command Ranges that maximize chances for Leader Checks?

Corps HQ - subordinate units no more than 5 hexes from Corp HQ

Army HQ - subordinate Corps HQ no more than 10 hexes from Army HQ

Army Group HQ - subordinate Army HQ no more than 15 hexes from Army Group HQ

OKH HQ - subordinate Army Group HQ no more than 20 hexes away from OKH HQ

Thanks.

No, if a check is done for a CU, then the Command Range Modifier is defined by the Distance CU -> HQ (for each HQ individually).

The Range Bonus (which is substracted from HQ ranges to determin the Command Range Modifier) is just some leeway for you to have some more freedom with moving HQs around.

The Chain is important for you to keep intact, so the distances between HQs appropriate (the numbers on the HQ counters (e.g. 4/15, 20/45...and so on).

This is by far the most important one. :)

Some math:
In a Chain where every Leader has a Rating of 6 and the Corps, Army and Army Group HQs are withing small ranges to your CU, the Difference between a 155Hexes away OKH and a 0 Hexes away OKH is 0.5% chance.

The same 0.5% you can see in this example comparing an Army Group HQ 60 Hexes away from your CU and 35 Hexes away.
The 60 would be calculated as if it was 60-15=45Hexes and the 35 like 35-15=20Hexes distance.
If you move the Army Group HQ another 15 Hexes closer to 20 Distance you end up "mathematical" 20-15=5Hexes away and you will add another 0.4% Chance.

For the Army the numbers start to get serious, here the change between 12 (12-10=2) and 18 (18-10=8) is already 1.12%.

And finally.
The difference between having each HQ the maximum distance from the next HQ without breaking the Chain versus having them all wihtin "0 Command Range Modifier" distance in our Example,.....is 3.735%. It increases the Chance from 74.25% to 77.99%.

(I hope all is correct, but so far noone complained  )
