Error while running fleet exercise

Post by thedoctorking »

I decided to run a fleet exercise. I assigned my ships to friendly and enemy sides and then set the exercise to running under AI control for both sides.

For one thing, my carriers are way down in the Gulf of Guinea while the rest of the exercise is taking place, bizarrely for Germany, off the coast of France.

Then I got a series of error messages, so I decided to give you the save file and let you figure it out.

I got through that one by pushing the return key alot when the error message came up, but in a later fleet exercise, the error was so persistent that I couldn't even save the file to give it to you. The fleet exercise thing appears to be broken, at least for me.

Lost my save because of an error in fleet exercise. Just kept repeating. Said something about an error in rtw3 module and had some memory address.

Edit:
Happens quite often in fleet exercises, so much so, you can start a new campaign, hold a F.E. and replicate it. Seems to be a damage / detach from division issue maybe..
Error in DetachShip procedure!
Division: Enemy Light Cruiser Division 1 CL Leipzig
Access violation at address 006AF426 in module 'RTW3.exe'. Read of address 00000068

Another issue with the fleet exercise, which may or may not be related to error messages, crashes I've been getting:

During setup of a fleet exercise, when you remove a ship from a division, it gets removed from the division and goes back into the pool of selectable ships, but so do ALL other ships in all division, though they also stay in their divisions.

Basically removing any ship from a division resets the ship pool to show ALL SHIPS in the fleet again, regardless of how many have been put into divisions.

So, if you are not careful, you can end up with duplicated ships, in fact its fairly easy to do this.

Had this same problem again today, under the public beta, so still an issue. I had the problem with all the ships being deselected and still available when I only chose one to be deselected, and canceled out of the fleet exercise gen and started over, but still got a catastrophic series of errors that killed the exercise midway through. I couldn't get a save file since the errors were so pervasive that the game wouldn't advance.

Edit: when I tried to restart the game, it came up in the middle of the exercise, so I guess it did save. And now is stuck... So I am able to give you a save file for whatever it is worth.

Over on the NWS forum, Oldpop has highlighted similar issues are due to software problems.

Considering that this is the only game where I experience this, I'm guessing that the software that is at fault is RTW, not some other program. Also, since this happens consistently in this one aspect of the game, and the memory location that the error message refers to is pretty consistent, I'd guess that someone in your team of developers could figure out what part of the program that handles the fleet exercises (or maybe the AI control, since I run my fleet exercises with AI in charge of both sides) is trying to use memory addresses that are otherwise in use.

But I'm not a technician, so what do I know?

Thanks for the report. The issue with all ships being returned to the available list has been fixed.

As for the errors in the Fleet Ex itself, in what version of the public beta did you encounter them?

I am on Steam so I update whenever the new public beta drops. So take a look at the date for the save file I posted (I would have posted immediately after experiencing the error).
