Attack Odds Question

Post by RJake1 »

Sometimes when I add units to an attack the odds in favor of the attacker actually decrease. I would have thought the more units joining in the fight the odds would increase in the attacker's favor. For example, initial attack window shows three units attacking with another two units available to join. Odds at that point are 5:1. When those two units join the odds decrease to 3:1. Thoughts?

As a relative newbie to the series, I've had the same question.

I try to make sense of it by assuming that some units dilute the attack by being too weak, not efficient enough, not suited for the terrain, etc. etc.

At least, there's the following game mechanic: "Also keep a critical eye on the stack points. Normally, you’ll want to avoid overstacked attacks as they’ll make you suffer more casualties." (manual)

When it comes to ranged attacks, it becomes a bit more difficult to understand. Committing more ranged firepower to an enemy hex should always give better results. But maybe some units draw attention due to their ranged fire while they have weak defenses against return fire?

What I'm also looking for is a methoding of predicting these things, so I dont have to click every possible combination of units to get acceptable attack odds predictions.

best, bm
