Landing supplies???

Post by ScottyG »

I have noticed that in the last several landing attempts that when my troops land only a very small amount of my supplies are making it aboard the island hampering my invasion attempt and of course once all the troops have landed my ships then depart leaving a mass amount of supply left on the ships leaving my troops with very little to fight with, why is this happening??? :?:

Can you post a picture? Do you have dedicated supply TF's? Are the supply TF's in Amphibious mode? Need more info....GP

Perhaps it helps to set the TF on "no withdrawal" to ensure that it does not leave before it has unloaded completely.

During any landing of troops the fighting troops unload first, followed by support squads and light equipment like mortars, then heavy equipment like arty and tanks. Supply is last.
If you are intending to land everything in two days you will not get much supply - unless you load some ships with "supply only" and then merge them with the main TF so they unload simultaneously. You can also help your cause by loading pure infantry units with little heavy equipment on the xAPs and APDs while loading the equipment-heavy units on xAKs or AKs or beaching craft like LSTs and LCTs. Some players load a lot of supply on LSTs because it will unload in one phase (IIRC).

This is all part of the choreographed dance of an amphib invasion. That starts back at the prep phase for LCUs, then suppression bombing and bombardment over weeks of game time, then sending the Amphib TF with attendant ASW, AAW, and anti-surface protection, minesweeping by dedicated TFs and embedded minesweepers, bombardment by embedded CAs and BBs, Amphib FORCE HQ on a command ship in a separate TF, units that speed unloading like Port Service Dets, Amphib Trucks, etc, and close support air strikes from nearby bases or CVEs.
That's the list off the top of my head but I may have missed some. It will take you a dozen landings to get good at it from planning through completion.

The remain on station option for task forces helps keep those cowardly cargo captains in line.

And it is usually bad idea to use xAP and xAK in Amphibious invasion, since those don't have dedicated landing crafts like APA, AP, AKA and AK, so x-ships unload very slowly unless in friendly port. Think it as if they were invading using their lifeboats... These smaller landing crafts in e.g. APA are abstracted, but they help all TF to unload.

LST and LCI will beach themselves and unload very fast. LSD too, which have lot of abstracted landing crafts.

Basically use dedicated amphibious ships like above instead of transport ships. Japan does have amphibious bonus during first 6 months, so they can get away with it for a while. Plus Japanese units are usually not so heavy in equipment, so they unload faster anyway.

What Sardaukar writes is true - after April 1943 when the first APAs appear and LSTs are coming in good numbers. Early game, you have no choice but to use xAKs and xAPs. I make good use of the small xAPs with 500P/750C load - they empty out fairly fast and can then leave the landing site. Larger, longer ranged xAPs and xAKs are on transport/cargo duties between friendly ports.

Don't see this option, i do see the "remain on station option" tho, i set it to this to see if it helps.

Yes, "Remain on station" is the option that is good to use.

Note that you also have few AMCs (merchant cruisers, not AMcs which are local minesweepers), that are quite good in Amphibious TF if they have troop/cargo capacity (not all have).

Have clicked on quite a few of my supply convoys using the "remain on station" option but it does not seem to help, could this be because i have a mixture of ships withing these convoys (AK's, APA, etc, etc)??? :?: :?: :?:

Nope. They could be retreating from enemy surface units. A picture before any changes to the TF will help . . .

If the TF already had the home port as its destination before you clicked on "Remain on Station", it will go to the home port. You must change the destination to current location before setting remain on station if you want it to stay there.

To add to the above, sometimes the order in which you make settings is really important. In those cases, change a setting, like "Do Not Unload" for example, to block what you DON'T want to happen, then do your routing instructions and remove the "Do Not Unload" setting to enable it to unload at destination. IIRC, I have had to do this when I have a fully loaded TF ready to leave port but I want to add another ship or two to the TF and have them load before it departs.
