Advice Assigning Const and RAD SU to Locked HQs

Post by Champagne »

I'm playing my first GC vs the AI and I'm developing my Locked HQ SU Assignment skills. I'm confused about the proper HQ Assignment of Construction, Engineer and RAD railroad repair SUs.

21.5.6 Automatic Attachment of Support Unit - this section contains a Table indicating the number of Construction and Engineer SUs assigned to each level of Command Unit. Table says that Army Group is assigned 16 Const and 4 Eng SUs. Army: 3 and 3. Corps 2 and 2. Question: Should I follow this Table when I manually assign the SU Const and Eng units to the HQs?

Second Question: The FBD units that I control are Assigned some Const and RAD SUs in my game. Can I safely Re-Assign them to other HQs, thus leaving the FBD with no assigned SUs? Or perhaps the FBD unit needs those assigned SUs to perform its mission? I don't want to move the FBD to a new hex to perform railroad repair work only to discover "Hey, we can't repair here because we have no workers posted to this FBD!"

Final Question: The Axis have exactly 7 RAD SUs that are ready to be Assigned to a HQ for the purpose of performing their own AI-controlled Rail Repair activities. Is this correct? Is there a list of these units posted somewhere? I will find them and assign them to a Corps HQ and let them repair within a 5-hex radius.

I do understand how the various Combat SUs function when Assigned to HQs, but, I have yet to master the utilization of the SUs in the categories of Construction, Engineer and Railroad Repair.

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply!

RADs in Norway, huh? Well, I'll have to see about that.

Do you have any thoughts on my other question about the number of Construction Bns and Eng Bns assigned to the various HQ levels?

Q2. No, you will kill the fbd. Attach floating German 'r.a.d'. su's and Romanian 'rail' su's to an empty corps hq, lock it and use it as a poor man's mobile fbd.

Use the commanders report name filters to find them easily.

There might be a bug as I've had a few abandon the Romanian hq I assigned them to. It's not happened with German corps hq's however. Maybe the food is better 8-)

Thanks! What are your thoughts on my question:

" Rulebook Table says that Army Group is assigned 16 Const and 4 Eng SUs. Army: 3 and 3. Corps 2 and 2. Question: Should I follow this Table when I manually assign the SU Const and Eng units to the HQs? "

Do you follow this guideline?

Thanks again.

No.

Remember they consume supplies and trucks. Keep them well away from the front line till needed.

I have no German experience, but I should note that Engineering SUs (aka pioneers) must be allocated to corps HQs or directly to units. Only construction SUs can be sent everywhere by higher HQs, all other SUs must be in the unit or the unit's direct HQ or they will not join battles.

OK, in light of the post after yours, I see now that it would be more helpful for our conversation to separate the Construction Battalions from the Engineer/Pioneer Battalions from one another as separate topics. The Eng/Pioneers actually help in combat, so, I'm sure that you don't advocate keeping them "well away from the front line."

Let's focus on the fact that the Construction units do not fight and help in combat, so, we keep them away from the front line because they consume trucks and supplies. This generates two questions:

1) Where do we keep these Const units so they don't consume trucks and supplies? OKH?

2) Can you elaborate on the "till needed" part? In your gaming, when do you bring them forward so that they can do their thing building Fortification levels? First big Mud Turn, Turn 18?

Everyone plays the game differently; if you are not going to use a specific type of unit get rid of them.

1. OKH. (and Norway and Finland etc). From OKH you can draw them down to repair Railyards, Ports, Forts, Airbases etc

2. When needed? Once you have determined where your defensive line is going to be for the winter start building. So not so much a specific turn but how close have you come to meeting your objectives.

CONST units have 3 uses. To repair ports and lvl 2+ railyards in captured cities prior to connecting them to my rail net, and building LVL 2+ defences prior to the winter '41 soviet offensive /German collapse. (for sheltering units you need a city hex or lvl 2 fort)

So i leave them where they are till mud. When I capture Riga, etc, I'll assign a couple to hurry repairs,

Then in mud i manually assign most of then to Corps HQ's and keep the HQ in 5 hex range of its units to speed fort building.

In spring '42 they go back to OKH.
