Evacuations

Post by EUBanana »

I need some tips on how to expedite an evacuation from a base which is within range of enemy bombers.

How do you do it? Submarines? Dakotas? APs? Fast transports?

Is there a way to pull out troops with Dakotas stationed elsewhere, or do you have to have the Dakotas in the base your evacuating? Is there a way to have fast transports dash in, pick up, and leave, rather than dash in, drop off, and leave?
Do submarines carry guns or are they troops only like Dakotas are?

Whenever I try an evacuation I get slaughtered, so i never bother, I just leave the troops to fight no matter how hopeless it seems.

I imagine this is not the way to do it though. Any advice?

FT can do a pick up. They have to start in another base, click on load troops and when the next screen comes up look at the bottom and there is a button labeled pick up unit. Click that and you can tell it to pick up any unit of yours on the map. In UV C-47s have to be at the base, there is no pick up order( changed in WitP ). Subs will only take troops and not many of them at a time.

BTW, C-47s will take the smaller guns. I think load factor 10 or less.

I feel your pain, brother. I will soon surrender the remnants of three divisions stranded at Tomo after a failed attempt to capture Noumea. There are 200 fighters and more than 200 bombers at Noumea and Koumac, and trying to evacuate my ground forces by fast transport does only lead to heavy ship losses...[:(]

Weigh your options If you think you can get them out quickly
and not lose too many ships then do it.
It can be very costly if your ships get pounded by the air,
loss of ships as well as your troops, although if the weather is in your favor
go for it.[;)]

Also if you pick fast transport with the load only troops option
you will be able to get just troops and not waste time with supplies.

Not that I would recommend this approach to anyone but I recently evacuated almost 80000 troops from Australia after a failed attempt to take Townsville. Part of it was psychological. I had my opponent thinking I was bringing in reinforcements so he wouldn't attack. Part of it was I had all 11 of my CVs parked off TV providing air support that mostly neutralized the US and Aus air assets. I really lost to the USN BB though. My own battlewagons wouldn't stick around and I lost EVERY escort I had in the transport TFs. Yes that's right. I parked 3 huge TF full of transports(65 total) right at TV and started loading up. I also had 6 fast transport TF running back and forth to GG.

Was it worth it? Well I lost almost all the parent formations so I will not get any replacements for my inf formations. I have also found the unit fragments have a disturbing tendency to disappear when trying to recombine them without a parent formation. Still I got enough out that I can fight on. And that was the whole point.

Distance Townsville-GG is bad enough, but GG-Noumea is even worse, esp. for the fuel situation. My TKs, AOs and big APs loaded with fuel couldn't carry enough juice to GG to even keep my CVs and BBs operating. Fast-transporting troops and supplies to New Caledonia burned a lot more fuel than expected. I had stockpiled in advance of course, but not enough. Thus I was unable to keep US air assets down with my CVs for more than two weeks before the fuel situation got precarious - that's what doomed me. I had a 10.000 to 3000 lead in points when I started the move south, now with all the ship losses it's 10.000 to 5900, and I wonder what it will look like after all my troops have surrendered... [:(] Pending good weather (i.e. thunderstorms), I will try to evacuate at least HQs and base forces and leave the rest to die for the Emperor in a final shock attack. BANZAI!

Re-reading Quark's post here I smile and realize "if I only hadda known they were "leaving"...." Ah well. But I do agree with his statement about not recommending that move to anyone. From what I've read it seems the IJN pay almost double when an invasion doesn't acheive the goals intended and the decision to leave is made. Even with the 11 carriers providing LRCAP for weeks on end, they didn't help him much against subs (although his FT destroyers did), but his escorts suicidally defended the transports against LBA, subs, and the occasional foray into the target rich environment by North Carolina and Maryland.

I would recommend the IJN player be very sure about commiting to a long distance large-scale invasion (unless you play me [;)] ). Getting out isn't always as easy as getting in.
