Cannot launch game

Post by Jim D Burns »

I've owned the game and had it installed on GoG for years. Tonight I bought a copy on Matrix and uninstalled my Galaxy copy and then installed my new Matrix copy. The game will now not launch and I get this pop-up. I can only assume it has something to do with registry entries or something from the two versions of the same game getting crossed up or something.

I should mention I first patched the new game before I tried running it.

With that error message, it looks like you had the most recent version running and then installed an older version, so the SC3.ini file is now incorrect, e.g. looking for that older entry that is no longer there.

So this tells me that perhaps the latest version of WaW, e.g. with the latest patch, has not been properly installed.

You could try to install it again to see if that helps?

The alternative is to delete the SC3.ini file and when you launch the game, it will try and rebuild it correctly for you and it should work after that, but again you'd likely be running the non latest, non patched version of the game.

To delete the file, navigate to the following folder:

Just fyi this folder did not exist. Uninstalled game, redownloaded and reinstalled and folder still does not exist. Same pop up error message. Perhaps the installer is the issue. Any chance there is a folder/file somewhere from the GoG install that messes with the installer? I uninstalled the GoG game using Galaxies uninstaller, didn't dig around to make sure there are no files the uninstaller misses.

Forgot to add, try replacing <username> with your username on the PC and you should be able to find that folder after that.

That's very odd, do you have another drive, e.g. something other than C: drive that it might have the same path to?

If not, if you did a file search from your main drive, let's say the root of C: drive if that is your main drive, for sc3.ini, does it find the file somewhere?

Nope, just the C: drive. Nothing listed when I search for sc3.ini either. Is it possible the folder installed where my other strategic command games are? I have 3 games total (WWI and Civil War titles) installed including this one, the other two work just fine so I assume their folders are somewhere else, or do they not use the same launch routine as WaW? Would this folder be in another location on a GoG install? Perhaps it is still on my PC and thus the new folder didn't get created in the right spot? Of course with no sc3.ini found I would guess not.

I went in and checked just to be sure, the core game files are installed, so just this folder is missing for some reason.

As an experiment I uninstalled the Matrix version and reinstalled the GoG version and the game launches fine on GoG, so whatever is happening probably has something to do with the two versions or perhaps Galaxy is related to the issue. Also even though the game launches no sc3.ini shows up on search and the folder still does not exist.

Very odd as that is the only spot where that file would be created and read from, and the game is reading it and not finding that line etc

e.g. all the SC games would install their USER files here, no matter if Matrix, GoG or Steam:
