New scenario for testing: Harpoon, 1980

Post by Stanley_The_Rolmate »

Hello everyone, I've just completed this small scenario based on an Iranian navy operation during the Iran-Iraq war, I look forward to hearing what you think about it.

Scenario description:
During the first weeks of the Iran-Iraq war, the Iranian navy did not equip any of its ships with the nine RGM-84 Harpoon missiles delivered by the US before the revolution.
Iranian fast attack craft engaged the Iraqi navy numerous times using their guns. But as the war enters its fourth week with no end in sight, and faced with continuous attacks by the Iraqi navy against convoys transporting crucial supplies to Bandar-e Emam Khomeyni, the Iranian navy has decided to arm the missile boat IRINS Joshan with two Harpoon missiles and has tasked it with drawing out and destroying the Iraqi missile boats from their base at Umm Qasr.

- 10-3-2024: uploaded version 1.5. Scenario duration lengthened and I made some additions to the briefing.

I won the war! The Iraqi dogs capitulated as soon as they saw the Mighty missiles the imperialists traitors donated.
Big success!

Ok, so a few things to note here:

- The timing: I feel like is made too short, if it WAD. If you go by the design choice to have a time pressure, then maybe make sure to mention it three times in capitals in the briefing.

- The Sea King Lost Control! Man, I've never seen that in CMO/CMANO! As it was on the look-out, chilling as much as it could on the frontline, I saw the Sea King go mad and flare up to its max flying height. Brave attempt to reach space for the glory of the Revolution? Sabotage?

Regarding the scen in itself: I think it's an enjoyable and approachable scenario that showcases the force multiplier a helo can be for ASuW. Without it, the range superiority one has is nullified and all then relies on SA.

I was a bit surprised not to see the two OSA come out to play. I would have used them to triangulate the Iranian position and/or overwhelm its local defense with a full salvo.

If only winning the war was that easy, haha.

I made the timing short because I wanted it to be finished before sunrise, as that was when the Iranian and Iraqi air forces would come into play. I might start it somewhat earlier if it's too short, though.

I've never seen the 'lost control' thing either, and I can't remember reading about it in any patch notes, though I may have missed it.

Did the OSA's not come out of Umm Qasr? Can you see where they got stuck?

Somehow, I couldn't save (an issue on my computer).

The second OSA stood at the edge of their patrol zone, right next to a neutral ship, nice! (The non hostile contact on the left corner of my screenshot is a fishing boat)

As it's by design, please mention it in the briefing. It came as as surprise to me.

hmmmm, I though I fixed that, I'll have a look.

Were all of the contacts marked neutral automatically, or did you manually mark them? All of the ships of the Iraqi coast belong to the 'Merchants in Iraqi waters' side and are supposed to be unfriendly, and you don't get any points subtracted if they sink.
