Aircraft Carrier with Reduced Air Operations Capacity

Post by DWReese »

When an aircraft carrier is damaged, and the damage indicates that the carrier has reduced air operations, is there anyway to know exactly how damaged, and what those limitations are?

If you look at the aircraft items that are "reduced" they don't say anything other than what they would normally say. The reason that I ask is should I immediately send my CAP toward another base? Would the carrier be able to land its large aircraft, even if only short ones can take off? Is there a size limit? Or, does damaged mean non-functional (but not destroyed) until it is repaired? If the damage means only partial, how would you know what can land and what can take off? Any idea?

This unit damage/max air ops relation is what confuses me these days.

Based on D's post back in 2017 (https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/view ... 8#p4141878), max a/c size that base unit can handle will be downed by one level every 25% or above 90% damage. Note reduced capacity will be based on unit's structual damage itself, not component damage of air facility.
--0-24.9%: No effect
-25-49.9% damage will down air ops level by 1.
-50-74.9%: downed by 2.
-75-89.9%: downed by 3.
-90-99.9%: downed by 4, air ops will be basically prohibited.

So, theorical damage/max air ops relations will be as follows:
-Destroyer/Frigate (Med)
--0-24.9%: Medium
--25-49.9%: Small
--50%+ : No air ops possible

-Aircraft carrier (Large)
--0-24.9%: Large
--25-49.9%: Medium
--50-74.9%: Small
--75%+ : No air ops possible

-Land airfield (VLarge)
--0-24.9%: VLarge
--25-49.9%: Large
--50-74.9%: Medium
--75-89.9%: Small
--90-99.9%: No air ops possible

However, CMO 1328.14 experience showed that 50-89.9% damaged carrier still can fly med sized aircraft, or large sized one from land airfield. I have no idea this is glitch or result of model change. (will post test scen as requested)

I came to a different conclusion.

The carrier (Ford class) had 30 percent damage but could not launch or recover any planes. I should have tried helos, but I forgot. I sent a pair of fighters (F-18s) to RTB. They approached the carrier and split from their group, but then just went into a racetrack waiting to land. I tried to have another pair take off, but it kept saying that it was waiting for a runway. The F018s ae medium-sized aircraft, if I read it correctly.

I'm not sure if it works, and I'm just reading it wrong, or what exactly is it supposed to do. The status of the elevators, runway, arresting cable, etc. all said "Operational Reduced Capacities" or something like that. But, the exact wording did not change from what it said for each of those items from when it wasn't damaged.

I'll have to play around with this some more.

You explained the differences between the Light, Medium, and Heavy damage, but what is "Operational, Reduced Capacity" in comparison to "Light Damage?" What is reduced when the damage states "reduced capacity?"

EDIT: I understand your explanation. The carrier has received 30 percent damage, so it would be down one level. So, if it could not launch LARGE a/c, but it would be able to launch MEDIUM and SMALL. That's why the F/A-18 can't launch but the F-35 can. That makes sense.

The reduced capacity is telling you it can't operate aircraft at it's max size. They mean the same thing as damaged states, and use the same colors, but they're specific for air facilities.
