WITP Super Admiral's Edition

Post by ncc1701e »

I know this is General Discussion forum. But honestly, I fear that my next PC will not be able to run WITP Admiral's Edition. If Matrix wants to invest in a new iteration of War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition, let's say a revamped version to current standard, I would buy it immediately.

There have numerous queries about a possible WitP/AE 2 over the years. The answer has always been an empathic no. Given the age of the original code, you'd have to start over from the ground up which is seen as not worth the investment for what is oft described as "niche" monster game.

Were it to happen it'd probably have to go though a protracted development period. Even the latest beta has been hanging fire for a while now.

Just keep the old PC for that. I have one with AMD Sempron 3100+ processor and Windows XP in the corner on the floor for such cases (been a long while...). Even father's PC with 40 MHz processor is still around and in working condition. Commodore 64 has lost its power supply and a number of (keyboard) keys though

If you are worried about old computers taking too much space, get old laptops while still available. Much easier to store. Even if battery goes bad, one should work with mains power alone.

What kind of computer are you running now? I have a Win 11, 3070, and a Ryzen 3800X that is running it.

Several years ago I took on continued code development for Empires in Arms. I am still using the old Borland/CodeGear C++Builder compiler from 2007(!) to keep it going. A few years ago I looked at upgrading the code from the older ANSI-based compiler to the newer Embarcadero Unicode-based compiler. After a couple of very frustrating months I determined that this was a near-impossible task, like replacing every old 2" nail in your house with a new 2 1/2" nail. Unfortunately (AFAIK), the compiler folks (at least Embarcadero) don't make conversion programs to magically upgrade old code to new code. That would be ideal, to allow code developers to salvage old programs and update them to run on newer operating systems. Alas, the best we as users can do is to hope that the newer operating systems have compatibility settings that allow older programs to run.

That was my fear. I am running Windows 10. If you say it works on Windows 11, that's great.

Thanks

Oh wait. I have Win 10. I apologize. I just built a new computer with Win 11 and have not tried it yet. This is my old computer and the Ram isn't capable of running Win 11? I have no idea why.

So, you may still have issue. I'll try and set it up on my new computer to see.

I don't think Win 11 will make half of the games in the world do not function properly. Win 11 is not made in China :) WITP already working perfectly under Win10 - maybe working more smooth than recent WITE 2-. As long as it has similar switch paramaters as win 10 no one should worry..
