HELP!!!!!!

Post by GBS »

I have really screwed up. Some how my computer is no longer recognising HTTR. I messed up somthing while attempting to reorganize my file by moving the Matrix file by drag and drop from the C drive into the programsd folder.
Then when trying to start the game got a message that says " Error executing file C:\matrixgames\Highway to the Reich\start.exe. System could not find the file specified." Couldn't get anything to work so I decided to uninstall the program and start again. I used the uninstall feature on the start up menue for HTTR and got "ERROR : could not load initialization file". Nothing worked including ADD/Remove programs feature on the control panel.
So then i decided to remove the file by deleating every thin manually from the C drive on my computer.

Now when I put the disk back in to try and reinstall the game all I get is The same error message about ther system not being able to find the Start.exe file specified.

I can't play, I cant uninstall and I can even reinstall. It's like my computer no longer recognises HTTR.

I have brand new machine with lots of power and using windows XP home.

Am I no longer allowed to play HTTR. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I guess that a registry entry is present.

By manually removing the folder and game, it's most likely that a registry entry is left and, when inputting the CD, it's checking the registry and, because it finds the key, it assumes it's installed - therefore it won't let you install - and when you click play - it won't let you play.

I would think the easiest thing to do is edit the registry (MAKE A BACKUP). I'd look for the string "matrix" or "matrixgames" or "matrix games" or "httr" or "highway"...etc...you get the picture. Once found, I'd delete the key.

BUT - and I warn you - I know how to edit the registry - if you don't know what to do, wait for technical from Matrix. They will know exactly what's going on and why and they may well have another solution.

I WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU MESSING WITH THE REGISTRY. It's just what I would do, but like I said, I know a little of what I'm doing with my PC - and if I do f**k it up, I can rebuild my pc...no crying involved.

Maybe someone else may have other suggestions to add. But I would say this is a registry problem.
Ive had this problem with a few other games, by doing what u done. I suggest u find urself a good registry clearner and clean up ur registry. There is a manual method that u can also use, but i suggest you need some experience doing that. Have a search online on how thats done.
Another way is too wipe out ur system and reinstall windows, I know that a pretty long cut but that should teach u never to manualy drag important files, when u can use the uninstallation program.

So then i decided to remove the file by deleating every thin manually from the C drive on my computer.

First backup your registry.

1. click "Start"
2. clikc "Run..."
3. type in "regedit" and click "okay"
4. browse to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Matrix Games"
5. Delete the complete "Highway to the Reich" key there
6. reinstall (and don´t move programms that use installers around anymore [:-][;)])

We will not be held responsible for anything bad you do to the registry of your computer.

You can install HTTR in your Program Files folder, during installation it will ask you where to install and you can browse for a different folder. Pick the one you want and it will install there.
