ATGM more effective than tank gun

Post by charlottep51 »

I don't know much about history , So it's not clear which ones are real ,
I just finished the CAMPAIGN BIG RED ONE 1/5 and 2/5,

In the game, I found that at distance about 6 hex, which = 3000 meters,
The ATGM has a much higher hit rate than the M1A1 gun,
Especially when the (shooting) vehicle is on the move,

This resulted in 2 x small armored vehicles with ATGM , more useful than 4 x M1A1
And at a distance of about 3 hex,

The M1A1 always refuses to fire (although it does more damage when fired) in same hex and same FOV,
while the missile vehicle is still very efficient firing and repel the enemy , especially those small unit with '' 1-3 HP ''

There is a known bug right now where ATGM units are firing faster than they should in a number of cases. We will be fixing that soon for the 2.1.5 update. Probably not making the upcoming 2.1.4 update.
OTS is looking forward to Southern Storm getting released!

One thing to keep in mind is that ATGMs mostly have HEAT warheads. A HEAT round does not depend upon kinetic energy for its penetration ability. It uses a shaped charged explosion to form a jet that burns (the science is not firm on the actual mechanic) its way through the armor. A HEAT round is not dependent on rage as a kinetic round is; the latter's performance drops off as range increases.

At that sort of range, the ATGM should have a better hit probability than the gun -- the missile's under guidance all the way out. Against tanks, it should have better damage probability, too. Since HEAT rounds work essentially the way described above, their probability of damage is pretty much constant with range -- so long as the warhead makes solid contact with the armor, damage isn't dependent on the warhead's speed at contact. That's one of the reasons TOW-equipped tank destroyers should be firing at maximum range.

Came here to ask the same question. I am still on the latest release update 2.1.3 and don't have too much game experience yet, but MBTs seem to do worse against AFVs than ATGM units of roughly equal vehicle number, although they are a bit more useful for sustained combat due to larger ammunition storage.
