Is Gunnery Training Worth It

Rule the Waves III is a simulation of naval ship design and construction, fleet management and naval warfare from 1890 to 1970. and will place you in the role of 'Grand Admiral' of a navy from the time when steam and iron dominated warship design up to the missile age.

Is Gunnery Training Worth It

Post by John S »

Only been playing a few weeks. Just curious as to the reactions of experienced players.

As a general matter, is gunnery training worth it? In general, it looks like it costs a fair amount, taking away shipbuilding opportunities, and I know it takes twelve months and then if you ever stop paying you immediately lose all the benefits.

Is it better to focus on more ships? Is there a point in time where gunnery training shifts from being not very important to suddenly important?

I guess I should ask a related question just to be sure. My understanding, I could be wrong, is that you pay the training amount on a monthly basis but it does not have an impact until twelve months have passed. Even after the twelve months have passed, if you ever stop paying you lose all the benefits that you have paid so much to get. Is that correct?

I think it is a +10% chance to hit. I always take every opportunity to do training that I'm offered.

Absolutely. Gunnery Training - especially coupled with Night Fight Training - can give you a massive edge in the early game, and is one of my 'go to' training policies.

i think gunnery and night training lose thiers purpose after radars are invented and used to direct fire, but until you have radars, it is worth paying it.

after all, in the end it doesnt matter how many shells you fire (number of guns/ships) but it matter how many times you hit.

That's my understanding as well.

Gunnery training is too expensive. A thoid. Skimmed right off the top.

For a third less, you can Rule the Night. You get that +1 and you own the night. You spot first, you react first. No longer the time when your pursued prey simply escapes. (Maybe add torpedo after you get DDs.) Drop Night Fighting when you get radar. But take Damage Control ASAP (swap out torps for that).

I respectfully suggest:
-- Start with: Night Fighting. Have ready for your first war if at all possible!
-- When you get DDs, (maybe) add Torpedoes).
-- Add in Damage Control ASAP (Prioritize Damage Control research.)
-- Drop Night Fighting when you get radar.
-- Stick with Damage Control; it's all you'll need.

Gunnery is a third too costly to enter into it.

Thanks for the tips. I am still relatively new and when I first posted above I was ten years into the game and got "sticker shock" when I saw how much gunnery training would cost for my then somewhat extensive navy. Interesting that I started a new game and began gunnery training immediately and the early cost was fairly low and then I got used to not having that money. The training definitely seems to help.

I will wait till the next new game to try night and damage control. Thanks again.
