Okhas and instructors

Post by davidgillsol »

Playing as Japan in a standard scenario long running PBEM and currently in Feb 1945. I have never been so far in the game, even against the AI, and have a couple of queries which I can't seem to sort out, searching the forum.
1) I am getting lots of Japanese air training groups (too late!) and there is a button to add instructor in the add pilots screen. However every time I click on it I get told no instructors available, even after freeing up some high experience, high skilled pilots. What are the criteria needed- and what is the effect of having an instructor?

2) Okhas are now available per the scenario and I have built a squadron of the Betty carriers. I am not seeing them in the pools though. However searching the forum I am not sure whether Okhas work (the implication in WITP is that they didn't), and if they do in WITPAE how you actually use them?
Does the squadron need to be changed to a kamikaze sqdn, even though the sqdn pilots aren't Kamikazes- what skill do the pilots need to be trained in, and what should I see on the mission screen?
Desperate to find even one far fetched possibility of getting through my opponents death star CAP screens!

Check the editor for the scenario you are playing to see if the Ohka was set to 'yes' or 'no' on builds. This was an overlooked issue for a long time. Unfortunately, if the answer is 'no' it can't be changed once the game is underway.

Think if someone changed the build rate to 900! Plus set the starting date sooner and the end date much later.

Thanks both. First time I have been in the editor since buying WITP so so so many years ago.
Playing scenario 8 and unfortunately the Okha is set not to produce. Will need to find some other way to try to whittle down the death star ( and the massed bomber raids as well).

If it was being produced the rest of my question stands: what do you see in the mission screen and how do you get to use it?

As for instructors, thanks for the response. Having freed a couple of the people designated as training sqdn from TRACOM, when I click on the instructor button at least I don't get the instructor not available message.

I have seen a few AARs showing the Okha being used. Most miss, but if one hits a ship it is devastating.
The Betty squadron should not be set as kamikaze but the weapon chosen must be the Okha (if that is an option). The Okha sqn is a type of kamikaze and the pilots should be trained accordingly (LowN only).
The problem for the Japanese during the war was that US CAP could extend further than the launch range of the Okha so the Betties got shot down before launching. Not sure how that is modeled in the game.
