DW2 plus epicness?

Post by LoBlo »

I love DW2. A lot. It brings the concept of a war engine, logistical constraints, and industry into a space war game like no other game. I hope the devs just keep on cranking out refinements. Cheers.

But I was playing Kerbal Space 2 lately and it remains players of the "epicness' of space flight. The immense power of surface to orbit maneuvers. The wild kinematics and the odyssey that space flight represents. Space X booster test firings give a great example (search them on youtube). The Shockwave blast of those engines is visually stunning.

Some games convey that epicness very well like KSP2 or the original homeworld.

I wish there was some way to combine the two. The awe of KP2 with the complexity and logistical game play of DW2. Anyone know of any good games that combine the two? I find DW2 is unique in what it offers (freighters, supply and stock, etc). Maybe in the future the devs can look at incorporating the awe back into space flight.

Cheers

If you are up for it, you could try Aurora 4X. You'll either love it or quit in frustration

In my opinion I think aurora is not like DW2 plus epicness.

Maybe "Children of a dead earth" or "Terra Invicta"? They are also pretty complicated.

Checking it out. Looks a little dated.

It's a current game being developed by one person. Its graphics look like they are from the 1980s because the focus is on the simulation, which is quite deep.

Thanks for looking into my recommendations. I thought, if you are interested in those, you might also be interested (if you do not own it already) a nother tip :-)

Aaaand, here it comes: The Competitor Number one for Epicness is still.....

Distant Worlds One!

I show you how great it is!!!!

It has rotating planets around the sun, and much more!!
If you want to play it with good vision, take you old television and use it as your gaming monitor.

So.. best is: 1920x1080 and the biggest TV you can get your hands onto.

I can show you some pics how it looks, and a video how it plays.

I did some graphical tweaks and it is in my eyes a real competitor to DW2.

Distant Worlds One!
I've never actually played DW1. I stumbled upon DW2 by accident. What's the gameplay difference between dw1 and dw2?

They are fairly similar. DW1 are in 2D so the ship weapons don't have any arcs of fire but you have more freedom of how to build the ships as a result. The two games play very similar and the automation are very similar. I would say the AI is a bit better in DW2 with the updates they have done to it. DW1 have a few mechanics more as it has a few expansions and development done which DW2 have not received yet. DW2 have bigger galaxies and handles more objects. DW2 races also have allot more differentiation than in DW1.

All in all they are very similar and play almost identically with only small differences. DW2 have a better graphical presentation the DW1 but you can still enjoy DW1 even today if you can get past the clunky UI.

Stars and Sector Size:
DW1: 1400 Stars and 15x15 Sectors (with rotating planets and moons)

DW2: 2000 Sars amd 10x10 Sectors (with a decent PC -> many GIG of Ram and Multicore CPU)

DW1 has many expansions where you can play as a pirate faction for instance.
The only problem is the clunky UI which you can counter with a huge monitor on for instance 1920x1080 and having 42" or greater (100cm diagonal)

DW1 is great and have some really nice mods too. Deffently worth a go.
Main issue i found with it, is lag. It runs really slow when you come to late game. And don´t even think about making those carrier fleets. They are good. But destroys what left of your frame rates.

Agreed. Lag. Single thread. It's still a great game.
