Stations / Ships / Creatures hidden by Planets

Post by HTG »

Game version 1.2.2.0

Hello,

I noticed more and more that under some conditions stations, ships, creatures, etc can be behind some planets and therefore are not visible when I am looking at a system, playing in top down view.
Lately I used "Game Editor" to modify the Galaxy of a new Game and I increased the size of some of the planets. This seems to be one option to trigger that problem for sure. In that case, constructions ships are moving below the planet to start constructing below the planet. New ships manufactured might be hidden as well behind the the planet.

Example:
Distant Worlds 2-Minig Station behind planet.jpg
Distant Worlds 2-Minig Station behind planet.jpg (55.12 KiB) Viewed 521 times
As long as the game can't handle it properly, I would like to have the option, to move the objects manually using Game Editor.

Best regards,
Tom

It rarely happens that in a normal game they are inside an object.

But it happens very often when you make the planets bigger than they are in normal game.

If you make them too small, ships can not colonizie or land. so here we are also more or less pinned down to keep the sizes as they are.

so this is no bug, but it is sadly as it is.

but how do you want to move the ships manually outside? hmm..
you can drag a rectangle select (control+drag left mouse button) and then tell them to move.
an enemy or vordicar is another thing.

Hi rxnnxs.

thanks for your reply.

Actually, your comment "If you make them too small, ships can not colonizie or land." would suggest, that there is a mechanism to define the outer border of a planet like object. The problem ist, that this mechanism is not adjusting when the size of the planet is changed and I do consider that a bug, which need to be corrected.
In case this mechanism ist static and cannot be adjust per planet like object, I would consider that a design flaw, which needs to be fixed as well. Do you agree?

Tom

It does happen in games without ever using the game editor. So it's a bug (reported here: https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/view ... 1&t=402518)

Ok, 11k is big. Too big for the orbit that is "hard coded".
Thats something I also fought with when trying to change galaxy sizes.
I stopped trying, because the engine has its limits.. the orbits can not be greater than x and the planets can not be smaller OR greater than y. and that caused me to do a full stop in modding intentions.

The only stuff I did after finding this out, was shrink the ship size. that looks good (in my eyes).

Well, well, 11K, you are creating extrem super Earth like planets ...
I was in the range of 2.5K (Moons) to about 8.5K.

But never the less, I would say "hard coding" is definitly NOT a good idea. I would expect, that something like that can be fixed, as it is quite annoying, if you don't see the stations or ships in the orbit of a planet.

Bets regards,
Tom
