BOTH have torpedoed neutral liners. The French twice.

I have been Allied with the USA for the whole time, they even have forces in the area. The only thing they've done to help so far is supply me with some fuel, which I probably had to pay for.

Now I know how France felt in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Franco-Itallian Wars, earlier in the save, where they always ended up facing a coalition of countries who entered on my side.

I didn't like the guy anyway... Arguably his inconsistancy and penny-pinching are the reason we lost. What's the damage?

Let's break this down.

Due to the aforementioned PM's poor funding of the navy, and the war I've just lost, I didn't have a lot of heavy units left and not much monthly budget to build them. Sadly the 10,000 ton limit means I can't build another Deutschland-Class knockoff, but I'll have some fun seeing what I can build.

I'm a little upset by losing the Quarto-Class CL Taranto but I've been building some more of them anyway.

I lose my only Dreadnought to the British. I have no luck with these ships. The first one was blown up in harbour by suspected French terrorists. As I was worried about them declaring war on me, and then Britain entering on their behalf, I took the safer option. Britain then declared war on me anyway the next turn. I won that war but the PM wimped out and gave them a white peace. The second one at least went down in an epic battle. They're really expensive to build.

Can't say I'm surprised about having to scrap the remaining subs.

As a reward for their tardiness, the USA loses the Eastern Aleutians to Great Britain. I don't think they even fired a shot!

The Nibbio-Class CVL was bigger than 10,000 tons. The first one went down in the final battle of the war, an airstrike got it.

The Varese-Class CA was 15,000 tons and was going to be my new standard fleet CA.

No great loss, ironically I think the peace was harsher on them. Serves them right!

During the Revolution there was damage to the ship-building industry, I now can only go up to 32,500 tons. The only thing I managed to build that was larger than that was the 36,000 ton BB Francesco Caracciolo, which the British took from me and renamed Prince of Wales. The remaining capacity is still three times the current Treaty Limit of 10,000 tons.

Think that's a display error, as the game only allows 10% and that's the value I have in memory from the manual. Already been reported at the NWS site.

The Auto Designer came up with a 12,000 ton CA, I clicked Check Design and the game had no problem with it. I bumped the Displacement up to 12,100 tons, at which point the design was declared illegal. As I was playing fair I didn't see how far I could get in the design and build process.

Later on in the save, there was a Naval Conferance. After some negotiation, the displacement limit would have been 22,000t but total tonnage for Italy would have been limited to 90,000 tons. We were only up to 95,000 tons and our fleet was dangerously weak - the next smallest power under the agreement would've been Spain at around 220,000 tons. I advised the General Secretary to tell them to shove it, which he did. I remained bound by the previous agreement.

A few months after that, the Foul Fascists of France declared war on me. This then cancelled the limitations. Despite the Italian Peoples' Liberation Navy having built up a 22,000 VP margin, and fellow Communists Russia joining the war on our side (after a mere 12 month delay), the Government collapsed and the General Secretary was put up against a wall and shot.

The resulting peace terms were remarkably lenient, I lost some more ships and Corsica. The ships were two of the Venezia-Class 10,000 ton CAs [1] I had managed to build, before the war invalidated the limitation treaty, and another one of the Quarto-Class CLs. I didn't have to scrap anything and no limitations were imposed.

I haven't had any limitations since then.

Notes.

1. The Venezia-Class were basically a scaled-down Deutschland class built to meet the 10,000 ton limit. This was largely done by reducing the size of the main armament to 10 inch guns instead of 11 inch. In operation they tended to run low on main gun ammunition and, in 1973, the rebuild of sole survivor Pisa will have 9" main guns and more ammo.

So, to update... a few months later Japan finally joined in. AH, Itl, Esp never did. After 2.5 years, and me invading and taking Lagos and most of the South Pacific (and inexplicably *not* getting North Vietnam after multiple months of 10x ship advantage), the war ended. Fun final battle, I had an ancient 30k/26 kt BC and a moden (mid-1930s) 12x8 CA against two French BCs in the Gulf of Tonkin. One of them was comparable to my Essex, the other an absolute monster... 52k, 12x16, 30+ kts.

As any smart admiral would, I sent in the Japanese DD division to cover a prompt "oh heck no I'm outta here". Daaaaang, those Long Lance's are nasty. Old French BC took three and sank, the other BC absorbed two for Hvy Dmg. Major Victory, war over. Britain's gov collapsed, and I gained a bunch more colonies.

These dudes are often very reluctant to join a war. There are many modifiers to the die roll. All the historical enmity/territorial conflict/relative strength stuff. Can't say I've ever seen a 23, though . . .
