CV Air Wing Settinga Clarification

Post by scout1 »

I'm newish ti to this game and the Air Wing setting still confuse me ...

There is a CAP setting as well as a Mode setting and I'm not understanding the specifics ....

If I want t conduct the following, what setting should I be using
- Offensive Strike, Land Units (say at Wake Island)
- Offensive Strike, Naval Units

Do these settings need to be in place prior to any movement, like Sub Mode settings ?

Does any of the settings remove all CAP over the CV group ? Kinda like some degree of escort w/o stripping away the CAP so the boys have somewhere to land when they get back ....

Any insight would be appreciated ......

Hi

CAP is for air combat, whereas the Bombers setting is for us when attacking any targets on land or sea (it does not matter which).

Yes, you will need to set the right setting before a) attacking or b) using up all your Action Points.

I hope that helps.

There is a "mix" setting for carriers as well for when you're not sure what kind of aerial opposition you are going to run into. In this mode your carrier can launch a strike against a ground or naval target, but if this strike is intercepted the carrier can send up an escort too. However, the act of escorting your first strike will burn up your second strike.

Setting your carriers to full Bomber mode will also greatly weaken their inherent air defense (I believe Mix will weaken it somewhat), as in the value which is used when an enemy air unit actually bombs it, so it can backfire on you badly if you don't sink or sufficiently damage most enemy carriers and/or land-based bombers on your turn. I found this out the hard way a few years back.
