Keeping track of submarine/submarine commander scores

Post by Bella »

A nice thing to add to the game, if that ever happens again, is the ability to track the tonnage sunk, maybe even a ship list, for individual submarines and/or their commanders. Be fun.

You can always do it yourself but if would be nice but a lot more unnecessary coding.

Yes, this would be a fun bit of "chrome". One would think this would not be too hard to program.
It would also be fun to see how much tonnage was sunk by surface combat, submarines, and air units.

I think in another 10 years Matrix will see this community is still thriving and will treat us to another update!

It'd also be nice to have some sort of code to simulate the two-week break USN submarine crews were due after a patrol. I often think the reason the Japanese AI merchant marine gets decimated so quickly in the game is that there is no downside to keeping as many subs on station as possible except for the odd damaged one. You never really have to worry about crew fatigue, turnover or morale. Of course that goes for all ships.

Good point. I’m okay with a 1 week R&R.

a one week R&R. I can see you have never served on a submarine. But the point is true - there should be some mandatory time in port after each patrol. Maybe a house rule.

Or in this case a 'hotel' rule. It was a mandatory two weeks in the Royal Hawaiian for the Pearl Harbor sub crews. 8-)

A relief crew manned the submarine while those fresh off patrol stayed at the Royal Hawaiian. The beachfront featured barbed wire, to keep trespassers from interfering with the relaxation of the submarine sailors. They ate in the ball room, converted to a mess hall for the enlisted, foods prepared by the Royal Hawaiian staff. Officers had a wardroom in one of the former dining rooms, and bars were converted as enlisted and officer’s clubs. They were assessed a nominal charge as a laundry and linens fee. Those submarines that returned from patrol to dock at Midway Island (many did when Pearl’s docks were crowded) missed out, and return to Pearl became the goal of Pacific submarine crews. For two weeks they enjoyed the amenities none could afford in peacetime, after which they returned to the extremely hazardous duties aboard the submarines.
Sweet Suite.

Thank god, I have never served on a submarine. Okay, 10 days.

I tried doing this in a paper notebook once, but it got messy with more sunken marus than room for some subs tallies. A spreadsheet would have been more ideal.

My first boat fishing trip was on the "Finback" out of Bodega Bay {North of SF}. I was 11. We caught a lot of fish.

I keep track of the U.S.S. Finback. I note her arrivals, departures and ships sunk. Easy to do with just one.

Good idea. I’ll pick my favourite. I guess a mandatory Two Weeks break for submariners is the correct, historical way to do it.

Not sure if you are aware of this tool, but it was written LONG ago. I think WITPQS wrote it, but I don't have it recorded. Anyway, it does work and I have been using it forever.
