Noob question - Amphibious assualts

Post by tonyp118 »

I recently watched a PBEM game in which the Japanese player does a shock attack amphibious assault on San Fernando on turn one of the game. He uses LCUs from the amphib force plus a paradrop. I understand paradrops are shock attacks but is there a way to have units attack either in deliberate mode or as a shock attack on turn 1 of the landing? Or has the Japanese player in the PBEM relied on his para units pulling off the attack?

When units with an assault vehicle invade or cross a river, they make a shock attack.

Also assaulting an atoll is automatic shock attack.

Well, an amph TF should perform deliberate attack at San Fernando, while paras should perform shock attack. Maybe combat reports conflate the two types of attack into the shock attack, while the under the hood amph LCUs perform deliberate attack, and the paras their own shock attack?

When one unit does shock attack and others deliberate attack, combat report indeed shows it all as shock attack.

Used to befuddle me when I often set Armoured units to shock attack and rest to deliberate.

For its generation, Combat Report probably uses attack mode of an LCU with the lowest ID number.

In my observations, if any unit is doing a SA, that is what the CR calls the attack.

You can sometimes tell if the SA was only one unit by looking at the modification of the raw Assault Value. If all the units SA and there are no big down modifiers like supply, fatigue or disruption, the raw AV would increase a great deal with the doubling effect of the SA. If only one unit did the SA the effect will be smaller accordingly. So What? - Well, the unit that does a SA usually suffers much higher casualties so if the enemy did a SA on your troops and the number of casualties represents only one unit shattered (confirmed by the Raw AV adjustment), you might reconsider doing your own SA to drive them out because the other enemy units are not so disrupted.
