New Madrid Impassible Border Hexes?

Post by DarkHorse2 »

The following screenshot marks 3 of the adjacent hexes as "Lakes" and is impassible to ground troops.

1. Cannot find any lakes at those locations to support making these hexes impassible or even a "Lake" hex.
(see - https://www.topozone.com/missouri/new-madrid-mo/lake/ )
(see - https://gisgeography.com/missouri-lakes-rivers-map/ )

2. While there were spring floods in the region, it did not make the area west of New Madrid impassible.
The natural barriers provided by the spring floods forced the Federals to march overland 50 miles to attack New Madrid from the west. On muddy roads in the midst of winter, this march was difficult but not impossible. On 28 February, Pope and his soldiers departed Commerce, Missouri.
3. FYI - Commerce, Missouri is approximately 45 miles north of New Madrid.

4. General Pope reached the outskirts of New Madrid on 3 March. Appears their rate of march was in excess of 10 miles per day - which was an acceptable rate of march, given the road conditions, during the Civil War.

5. General Pope would have had to cross one of the "impassible" hexes to reach New Madrid.

6. Have also included a snapshot of the New Madrid vicinity from another board game. Although the scale is a bit different, it does not have these hexes as impassible.

To have a 10 mile wide hex completely impassible to ground troops is highly unlikely.

The only cases I can think of are the Qattara Depression in Egypt, target of a nuclear detonation or maybe the Grand Canyon.

The New Madrid area really needs to be updated.

The following is a link to a cool USGS site that allows you to select and download historic topographical maps, like the one shown immediately after the link. However, the earliest detailed map is dated 1939 - which is actually closer to the date of the Civil War than it is from today.
