Quick question:

Do bad weather/navigation radars like H2S, H2X, Oboe etc. work in game?

Thinking of adding USAF Loran AN/APN-9, AN/APQ-7 etc. though basically they are all bit similar.

However, like sonar improvements for the allies, this might be built into the code. We don't know. I have never seen the devs comment about this, but also, this is the first time I can recall it coming up.

For the IJ, I can say I have never seen any operational weather improvement. For the allies, it might be there.

Added them to some planes (B-29 etc.) but cannot say I see any difference.

Yeah, but testing this would be brutal as you cannot control weather. So, you would have to run 100's of turns testing recording both starting and ending hex weather for the unit, and then determine IF there was any change in aborts due to weather. You would want to test across bases that typically have bad weather ... this would be one of the toughest tests I've heard of ...

Well, could always turn Advanced Weather Effects off.

"If the Advanced Weather Effects option is switched Off, the weather forecasts will always be
Partly Cloudy (except for turn 1 which will be clear)."


That should take out one variable out.

(Actually will probably do that for my next campaign, since weather seems to be shitty with it on even outside monsoon season.)

Except partly cloudy would mean that the nav radar wouldn't be that much (or any in this era) advantage. The advantage would show when you have bad weather and without the radar you can't see the stars/ground. Right?

You need bad weather to see the impact of the nav radar ....

They are more for night bombing. I just want to see if planes would fid target places better.

Understood, but the argument still holds ... it's about weather which you can't control. So to see the impact would just require a LOT of runs. Doable, but really, really painful to get results. Especially since we know there is a random element built into this for sure ...

It was more because they could not see anything in dark. :D

RAF stopped flying in bright moonlight because of losses.

"At night, except in bright moonlight, ac­curate visual checks were almost impossible, and the R.A.F. soon stopped operating in bright moonlight, because of heavy losses in­flicted by German night fighters. "

Doing test with advanced weather effects off would take weather out of equation, it being constant. Then one could determine if navigation radars work or not.

Ahh, you are likely correct in the European theatre.

If memory serves me correct, B-29 navigators used navigational star charts as they flew so high, generally above the weather. This is how I was thinking about it ....
