Steam version of The Longest Day

Post by seanny »

768p fullscreen on 1080p monitor
I like the 768p resolution that is stretched to fullscreen.
How can I do this?

My monitor is 1920 by 1080.
I wanted the soldiers and tanks bigger so I can see them properly.

If I alt enter or press f11 the 1366 by 768 window does not go full screen.

Ideas.

Make sure "Use DPI" is checked in the options menu, that seems to make everything sized right on mine and I'm at 3840 x2160.

I tried DPI that does not make a difference.

Try yourself , pick 768p and DPI.
See when you next start game that is only a small window on the 1080p monitor and there is no way to maximize the small window to fill entire screen.

I am curious though,
you use 2160p,
I assume you must choose 2160p in options.
OR do you choose 1080p AND check DPI?

Windows (starting with Windows 10) no longer supports the DirectX full screen mode the older Close Combat titles used to use to reset the display resolution and show you a smaller resolution at full screen. There is no way for the game to get around this, unfortunately.

You can achieve something similiar to a 'full screen' mode by setting the game resolution to your system's screen resolution and setting the game options for borderless window, scale the front-end, and scale the in-battle UI. This doesn't increase the size of the soldiers and vehicles, however.

Thanks for the reply.

I have checked 2 other games I have on Steam.
Close Combat - Panthers in the Fog
Close Combat - Gateway to Caen
These work perfectly ,with 768p becoming fullscreen ,and making the soldiers and vehicles nicely visible without squinting.

My query , I know The Longest Day does not have similar functionality,
BUT
Do any other games offered on Steam have 768p fullscreen as the 2 titles I list?
OR
are these the ONLY 2 titles with such function?

Yes, because the newer versions of Close Combat (Panthers in the Fog and Gateway to Caen) use a different DirectX screen mode -- 32 bit color in this case -- instead of the 16-bit color modes used by the older versions.

I think I have found a solution for this issue.
If I pick 1280 by 720 res.
I pick use DPI.
Then I use Windows Scale & Layout ,set to 150%.

This gives me an exact 1920by1080 window.
Only had a quick test in the CC2 remake game , I think it would work here too.
The low res is OK , I got used to it playing CC2 on Steam recently.
I will test further ,but this seems like a solution.
At least I can see the infantry now -
I tried the first scenario in the CC2 remake at 1080p ,and with the jungle and small infantry size it was really hard to see them ,worked out i can make the soldiers outlined in green ,bit of a help.

I think it should be spot on at 720p.

This may help someone else maybe too.

(PS the new Steam editions of CC2-5 ,only checked CC2 so far ,do run full screen at 720p.Not the remakes ,the original titles that were released on Steam in last few months .Someone might want to buy them maybe. CC2 seems pretty good.)

Hi seanny -- thanks for letting me know. I'm glad you found a way to upscale the game to simulate the actual full screen mode.
