[RESOLVED] Performance drop + mouse bug (new Steam beta)
Hello,
I opted into the newest Steam beta version and found that the game appears to be slower and less responsive than in the past. I can barely move around and zoom into the map, even on smaller- and medium-sized scenarios.
Additionally, I found a mouse bug where moving the cursor isn't smooth - it's 'bumpy' or uneven - hard to describe but imagine moving the cursor in one direction and it skips or freezes regularly instead of moving in a smooth and constant speed. This mouse problem occurs even when I alt+tab to a new window with Command running in the background.
I reinstalled the game overnight but this did not fix the problem. My game is presently in its raw state, no added scenarios etc, just the opted-into Steam beta.
Both of these problems occur in all scenarios I have tested so no saves are included here. Please let me know if you'd like any further information.
Thanks

Re: Performance drop + mouse bug (new Steam beta)
How about the specs on your PC. Especially important is the GPU and OS.
Re: Performance drop + mouse bug (new Steam beta)
Well, the dxdiag file for starters.
Are you using a laptop? If yes, does it have both an iGPU and a discrete GPU? If yes, which of the two is Command using?

Dxdiag attached
Playing on an (old) laptop - but I've run CMO (and CMANO) on it fine-ish for years
Using dedicated graphics card when running CMO - but it maxes to 100% immediately on launch, even in the menu, which is unusual

Re: Performance drop + mouse bug (new Steam beta)
Thats a 10-year old low end GPU that doesn't support DX11 natively and will struggle with the 64 bit version of CMO. You might need to go back to the 32-bit 1307 version of CMO. Just double check that your laptop doesn't have an discrete nVidia or AMD GPU.
Re: Performance drop + mouse bug (new Steam beta)
I know that my laptop is old. It's managed to run CMO fine before this beta, hence my surprise at the performance drop. It's using the dedicated graphics card too, not the integrated Intel graphics.thewood1 wrote: Sat Aug 17, 2024 11:53 am Thats a 10-year old low end GPU that doesn't support DX11 natively and will struggle with the 64 bit version of CMO. Re: Performance drop + mouse bug (new Steam beta)
I would double check that this version is actually using the discrete GPU nVidia card.
Re: Performance drop + mouse bug (new Steam beta)
I would also run Steam's integrity check on CMO just to make sure.
Re: Performance drop + mouse bug (new Steam beta)
Task Manager says that CMO is using the nVidia GPU, but the game itself doesn't actually show anything:thewood1 wrote: Sat Aug 17, 2024 2:31 pm I would double check that this version is actually using the discrete GPU nVidia card.

Re: Performance drop + mouse bug (new Steam beta)
Second case.
Re: Performance drop + mouse bug (new Steam beta)
It is possible that one or more of the (numerous) fixes/tweaks we did on the map renderer between B1328.xx and now has moved up the "needle" of minimum GPU hardware from "your GPU is adequate for this, barely" over to "your GPU can no longer cut it for this application". If that's the case then I am sincerely sorry for your predicament.CHM wrote: Sat Aug 17, 2024 1:53 pmI know that my laptop is old. As thewood1 mentioned this a pretty old GPU by today's standards, and we have been recommending a GTX 1050-level GPU (or AMD equivalent) as the minimum since the release of v1.06. (It's not a strict threshold; for example we've observed great results with AMD iGPUs).

If I may ask, not displaying a GPU is just a glitch and cause no performance problems?
Just noticed that Kushan also has this problem in his last videos, is it universal? May it be causing noticeable problems only in the old systems?

Re: Performance drop + mouse bug (new Steam beta)
I have three laptops all with nVidia GPUs (3060, 4050, and 4090). All have blank GPU and run fine.
Re: Performance drop + mouse bug (new Steam beta)
Unlikely, but we are investigating all possible leads.Nikel wrote: Sun Aug 18, 2024 11:20 am If I may ask, not displaying a GPU is just a glitch and cause no performance problems?

Re: Performance drop + mouse bug (new Steam beta)
OK, thanks for the answers.
Re: Performance drop + mouse bug (new Steam beta)
Thanks for your reply. It is a disappointment. I tested the beta on another (more powerful) PC and neither of my problems appeared - so I guess you're right, my laptop has reached its limit.Dimitris wrote: Sun Aug 18, 2024 10:09 amIt is possible that one or more of the (numerous) fixes/tweaks we did on the map renderer between B1328.xx and now has moved up the "needle" of minimum GPU hardware from "your GPU is adequate for this, barely" over to "your GPU can no longer cut it for this application". Have you considered making CMO usable with the Steam streaming feature? I've used it before to stream games from my (good) desktop to my (crap) laptop. However, CMO reacts poorly and isn't playable - I think it's all the multiple windows and the fact that CMO isn't technically fullscreen. If you like, I can make another discussion thread for this with screenshots?
Thanks
Re: Performance drop + mouse bug (new Steam beta)
Have you tried playing just with the borders and coastlines setting of the map?
Re: Performance drop + mouse bug (new Steam beta)
Miracle worker! The layers seem to have abnormal effect on my performance. I tested all the layers:Nikel wrote: Sun Aug 18, 2024 4:02 pm Have you tried playing just with the borders and coastlines setting of the map?
BMNG layer had the most debilitating effect, instant slowdown and mouse glitches
Base earth - some slowing, still playable
Sentinel-2 - better, I am going to try this with borders and coastlines with bigger scenarios for more testing.
Using borders and coastlines by itself gives the smoothest performance. Thanks Nikel!
Re: Performance drop + mouse bug (new Steam beta)
Just borders and coasts is not very fancy, but may be the only solution for old systems.
Re: Performance drop + mouse bug (new Steam beta)
There is a Command.ini file in the config folder.CHM wrote: Sun Aug 18, 2024 3:40 pm

You may edit it with a text editor like Notepad and change:
toStartFullScreen = False
StartFullScreen = True
