[WAD] 1405 Low FPS

Post by Swant »

I am running the beta on a desktop with Radeon RX 6700 XT. According to my AMD software I only get about 12 FPS.
The pulstimes seem ok.

Okay.........?

A couple of observations/reminders:

1) Command's map rendering performance is directly affected by what is being shown on the map at that moment. Rendering e.g. an overview of "Brass Drum" is a whole different affair than zooming out on Red Dragon Descends. Merged range-rings in particular are a render-loop perf killer. So without context an FPS value is meaningless.

2) Contrary to a lot of mainstream games (you know who you are) and the original CMANO, CMO's render loop is not lock-stepped to its engine/physics/sim loop, but running in parallel to it. So the map may be slow to render at some point for some reason, while concurrently the sim engine underneath keeps running screaming fast.

Hope this helps.

I just thougt 12 fps seems low with a Radeon RX 6700 XT but if that is normal then ok.

The fps is almost irrelevant is what I have found. More important is responsiveness of the mouse, menus, and map scrolling. I don't even pay attention to fps in a game like this.

Yes I agree with that but 12 fps is very low. Seems strange considering that I get good pulse times and can run some heavy scenarios without the processor struggling.

Yes, that's because the sim engine is independent of the map renderer.

I _am_ curious though, as to what "scene" drops your render-loop speed that low. Can you share a save of the situation where you are observing this?

This is what I get from all scenarios. Changing layers makes no difference

How is the FPS affecting your game experience? I don't get the problem.
What's the difference to see a still map with 12 or with 120 FPS?

Is it moving to slow, or stuttering? I mean I don't know your play style, but I for example don't move permanently just to my area of interest and there zooming a little in and out, make my orders and enjoy, or move to the next area.
Super fluent panning (What is the case for me respectively my system) is IMHO not important for the gameplay.
I personally often just use the borders and coastline layer. I like it because it has no distracting details, that are by the way not really used by the simulation. All bitmap layers, except the hideous Land Cover layer, are just eye candy and their features have no influence on the simulation itself. Means what you see on e.g. Sentinel Map or Topo Map is not what CMO is calculating with.

The more fluent the better

Yes
So I would suggest make a video, e.g. with OBS, zip it and post it, So devs can get eventually an idea what the cause is.

Just for a comparison, I have a an i9 CPU and a 4090 GPU. Ran Brass Drum at double flame. The FPS was consistently 6-16. It was 6 in heavy a2a missile engagements and around 15 normally.

But the map panning and zoom were very smooth. Map also updated normally with no lag. This all is no different than I saw in previous versions. I remember CMNAO was between 20 and 30 FPS.
