Intercepting aircraft

Post by Chris21wen »

Can some one confirm please.

To intercept a target I can
Set a patrol to investigate or
Launcher an a/c, select it on map then use Auto engage and select the target or
Launch and a/c, direct it using couse and speed to intercept before using manual engage.

What i can't do is select the target first then allocate assets to engage it.

This PGatcomb tutorial on interception missions may be useful. Ctrl + F11

Another one on the Intercept command. Shift + Right Click

Not sure that video will answer the core question. Though its a good video to watch. I think the OP is thinking of an old feature from Harpoon where you right click on a unit and you get a list of units that are capable of an intercept. The unit then goes off to attack the enemy unit. IIRC, the feature was in the classic Harpoon, but never made into the Harpoon 2 game.

I don't think you can do that directly with CMO. CMO is more mission-based and the expectation is you'll be using a mission setting.

Been a while since I played any game like this and yes, that's what I meant. So the answer is no. Thanks for the reply.

Found the feature you are commenting in Harpoon.
Airborne Threat Detection

Sometimes in computer Harpoon a new threat which can be countered by patrolling aircraft will be detected. Instead of having to launch new aircraft or selecting a group with patrolling aircraft and splitting them off to attack the threat, we provide the Intercept Screen.

Each available unit is shown, including their current distance to the target that needs to be intercepted. Move to the Unit(s) you want to use to intercept the threat and click your mouse on the Intercept button. Selected intercept aircraft will have a "*" show up to the left of the # of aircraft. When you have selected the units to use to intercept, select the OK button.

It had some serious limitations. The CMO patrol mission combined with ATO and Ops planner is a lot better to avoid serious micromanagement. In Harpoon, you had to be VERY careful using the feature. The big glaring issue was fuel consumption. Without careful analysis, you could easily send an out of range aircraft on an intercept. It would either crash or return to base due to unanticipated fuel consumption. It wasn't much better than just sending an aircraft off manually to attack. I used that feature mainly to help with manual interceptions by quickly comparing ranges. It's the only I used before moving to CMNAO.
