Repairing disabled devices

Post by Chris21wen »

You'd think after playing the game as long as I have I'd know but I need to know if I'm correct here.

I have a div with half its squads disabled. I think the fastest way to recover disabled devices is to and probably in this order...

Move it out of the hex with the enemy.
Set to rest.
Move it to a base, the bigger the better.
Have more supply in the base than the base requires.
Divided it. Three chances of recovery not one
A leader with good admin
Its HQ in command range with good admin
A command HQ present in the base with good admin

Please comment.

Missed that one. Usually cause problems as a div mauled in combat as normally lost support.

That is what the base forces and HQs are good for. I also advise new Allied players to save as many Dutch units as is possible for the extra support plus other common devices so they can help other units repair. Even if they just save a fragment of the original unit, it can be rebuilt and the Allies have so many extra support squads available as replacements. Any extra engineers and air support is just a good bonus as well.

Having it in a large base surrounded by large bases helps as well. So a unit will recover faster in Hiroshima as compared to say Hong Kong.

I thought that was about receiving replacement devices and not the repair of disabled ones?

The new manual says this page 227.
'...The unit may receive more than 1 of each item needed but must pass a series of checks to do this. Each
base that the unit is within supply range of may send replacements, so there is an advantage of being near lots of well stocked bases...'

This is what it says pare 185 on disabled units.
'...Disabled elements (the numbers listed in parenthesis on the Ground Unit Information Screen) may be healed/repaired and listed again normally
(this requires supply, support troops, and a low Fatigue level) however, if all the ground units on one side in a contested hex are disabled and cannot retreat,
they will be destroyed.'

My experience is that the farther they are from enemy units and the bigger the infrastructure around them, the faster they flip from disabled to normal. Anecdotal to be sure, but I'm pretty sure it comes back to supply. When they are in a more built up area, there is higher percentage of more available supply.

Troops disabled by malaria definitely recover faster in larger bases, so would expect the wounded to do so as well. Better hospitals or quarters, more medicines, more nurses (for you, RJ)... it's reasonable.

I think we would ALL agree that this relates to reality quite well. However the OP question is how is it actually coded. My evidence is strictly anecdotal. I may very well be moving units that don't need to be moved .... OTOH, it is more realistic which marries up with my version of gameplay against the AI ... in other words, it works for me. Not sure it is accurate though, and in a PBEM game that would matter ...

If I remember correctly, the larger the base is then the malaria has less of an effect. After a base reaches a certain size, then malaria no longer applies.
