White map versus green grass look

Post by Cpl GAC »

started on another thread - I put this here as this thread is about modding;
Magpius wrote: Sun Jul 07, 2024 8:10 am Is that white base map downloadable anywhere?
It's a retro beauty.
Here's the Dropbox link for the three PNGs; https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/kyje3mp5 ... v11uu&dl=0

In case anyone needs help on how to add modded graphics;
- find the Graphics Override folder in in your TOAW folder. If its an original scenario it'll be found where you installed TOAW, if its an added scenario go to the TOAW folder in your Documents folder.
- Example - if I'm adding it to my Russo-German War scenario; C:\Users\me\Documents\My Games\The Operational Art of War IV\Graphics Override\Russo-German War 1941-45
- if one doesn't exist, create a new folder in the Graphics Overide folder and name it exactly like the name of the scenario
- move/drag the PNGs into that scenario's Graphics Override folder (usually in sets of three - for zoom levels)

It might take changing other graphics to get the off-white background to look right. Most of my features are more traditional map representations versus real looking representations.

Here's the look I currently like to use - including the white map look;

Thank you so much.
The more the game looks like cardboard and print, the longer I will sit in front of it.

This guys blog has files similar to your terrain types, maybe you're aware of it.

(any chance you could add the other map bits, swamp, forests, etc?)

These graphics are the accumulated work of people on this forum's thread - they have done terrific work; Telumar, Shadrach, Zovs, Rhinobones, ncc1701e, and Larry, to name the ones I can think of. I only modded the open hex base color and modded an "optional08" graphic .

The folder is named how you install my current map look; https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/hp79xydg ... 32f6d&dl=0

The optional8 graphic - I like adding dots on the map to show where towns not included in the original map were located - it's only a reference, not a combat benefit; https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/view ... 6#p5008436

Again, thanks.
As a player of the old D-Day, Tactics II and other early Avalon Hill games, the more the mods look like cardboard, the longer I play them.
Much appreciated.

Think this is something that we all enjoy doing. Probably one of the best features of TOAW. Like the white terrain. Thanks for sharing.

It looks... like I got good at reading the Weather Briefing and Information Panel (the lower bar) because "vague" is a generous term for the appearance.

But - we get our counter color wish; https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/view ... 5&t=333172, https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/view ... 6&t=396157.

Worth the trade-off to me.

Re: Snow.
You can always toggle the weather on.
A quick mod of the snow clouds or weather in general, can create a good effect.

I like a beige color for clear hexes ... but then "it all looks like desert" . Not easy to find a good "clear hex" color.

Cheers
