[FIXED] Re: Excessive GPU usage leading to unusable performance

Post by Nikel »

I think the question was, if directX 11.2 improves performance, for example:

https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperi ... periences/

Why the GPU requirements are higher with the transition to directX 11, should they be lower for the GPUs that support it?

And the Sentinel-2 affair :)

Intel Iris and older GPUs use sw emulators to run dx11. It creates a lot of overhead. Not sure what the impact is for older AMD/nV GPUs. But DX11 has been around long enough that you would have to go quite far back to find at least an nVidia GPU that couldn't run it.

The experiments comparing the 32 with the 64-bits version done in the first page by RegenerationItawa, should be repeated in a system with a dedicated and modern GPU, I guess the devs already tested and were happy with the results and so made the directX 11 version official.
* MAJOR NEW FEATURE: New DirectX 11-based map renderer. The existing DX9-based map rendering engine has been wholly replaced with a new one based on DirectX 11. You should observe significantly improved zoom/pan performance, as well as reduced latency and increased throughput when rendering map layer tiles.
In short, if you have not a dedicated GPU...

Still, I am intrigued by the Sentinel-2 affair.

First, try with this checkbox("Disable fullscreen optimizations") and check for result,

and second best thing for performance which you can do is overclock,
you can do it right through Intel XTU app in windows(or bios)

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en ... l-xtu.html

here is video tutorial https://youtu.be/9tes3tCJq5Q?t=69,

on HD 770 gpu you can OC to around ~2000MHz from 1500 stocks, in terms of raw 3d performance this is 30%

RegenerationItawa < We are adding some performance tweaks on the render loop for the next update. When the update is released, please give this another go and let us know. Thanks!

I have AMD Ryzen 7 with integrated graphics and GPU load is still 100% with layers ON (start screen)
game version 1.06.1328.18

Can you try the beta version in steam?

Can you try disabling the active map layers one-by-one and see whose removal causes the 100% GPU load to stop?

unfortunately, I don't have free space for beta. But was any change in rendering (despite the mentioned web-view rendering) done there?

My favorite one was BMNG, but now it loads GPU a lot.

I disabled all layers and then switched them one by one in scenario Canary Cage 2005
Start screen (camera alt 2.130 km with all Canaries and almost the whole continental Spain on the screen)

[LAYER - GPU load]
no layers - 2-3%
base Earth - 14% (very blurry)
Lat/Lon Grid - 3% (no effect)
Sentinel-2 - 62%
BMNG - 96-98% (with 100% total load)
Relief/Baro - 96-98% (with 100% total load)
Borders + Coastlines - 14%
Open TopoMap - 67% (bad contrast with icons)
Land Cover - 52%
Placenames - 63% (that's surprising and I think it depends on the rendering method than on the content itself)

I don't think this is an absolute rule; for example one of my test laptops has an AMD Ryzen 4700U (Radeon Vega 7 iGPU only) and it renders just fine.

There have been quite a few tweaks on the map engine. When possible for you, we'd like you to give the public beta a try and report back.

Thanks.

Well, it's only 300 MB to have a beta (I previously took part in beta testing of another game and it required double size of the original game...)
Back to the topic - these tweaks work for me, now with the BMNG layer on and on the scale to see the whole Vietnam on full HD monitor GPU load is around 45-50%
