Weird glitches

Post by Shikikan »

So, new player here, been playing for about a month IRL, had my campaigns with both IJN and Allies in both the Thousand Mile War and Coral Sea, but decided to try my hand at Guadalcanal, but I'm faced witha few glitches and perhaps mechanics I do not understand that I would hope someone would explain to me.

1. After turn 60 or something, my ship-availability tab seemed to stop working, it'd show countless ships stuck in time, about 12+ stuck on 1-15 days ETA, I thought it was because of my varied arrival dates, but after round 300, I still hadn't gotten Junyou, nor Hiyou, nor Chitose, nor a bunch of subs.

2. Similar to the previous point, air wings stopped arriving in Guadalcanal, some troops still showed up here and there, but I felt cut out from the rest of my force, meanwhile the allies had seemingly unlimited aerial resources.

3. The allies don't seem to move their ships, they are all in port, they have 10 CV/CVEs to throw around and haven't left base once with them other than in the first week after they landed in Lunga and that other island they did IRL.

4. The only ships I've seen out of port for the allies, were small convoys (probably auto-convoys) and auto-submarine ops. Meaning I was almost home-free to move whenever and wherever I wanted.

5. I can't repair 6+ major damage at Rabaul nor Truk, I guess this should be expected?

6. I don't seem to be producing any aircraft nor getting replacements, I'm having to disband entire wings and merge them to keep my best wings at a decent fighting strength.

7. Is it normal for almost entire wings to go on maintenance despite the air base being big, having enough fuel and resources, and being on "stand down"?

8. I let the AI take control of the game for 1 turn, and everything seemed to buffer out, and go back to functioning properly somewhat? I still don't have 80% of the ships I was promised and I'm at the end of the campaign now,

Did you go with variable or extremely variable?

Neither port has a repair shipyard, so yes. I think only Sydney has one in this scenario.

You say you were playing 1000 Mile War (Scenario 5 - 62 days to June 15) and Guadalcanal Scenario 4 (185 days to Feb 7). The scenario ends on those dates and you cannot play on afterwards. There may be ships showing in the queue which are scheduled to arrive after the end dates because of random arrivals (which are determined when the first turn is run). Too bad, you just don't get them.
I am surprised you are playing 300 rounds - what has been happening if you are playing those rounds after the end date of the scenario? It sounds like you have been playing Scenario 1 but trying to play the short scenarios?

Major damage over 5 cannot be repaired without a shipyard or an AR for engineering damage or an ARD for floatation damage. I think the Guadalcanal scenario is long enough for you to send your ships off-map (beyond scenario boundaries) to a major Japanese base for repairs.

Production is off for most short scenarios. You get the monthly aircraft and ships specified in the scenario and that is all.

I am not sure what you mean by entire wings going on stand down. At the end of the scenario the certainly should stop operating, and during the scenario weather can ground them all.

Aircraft & pilot losses and lack of replacements are part of the realism of the scenario. You have discovered how to consolidate the small remnants into a combat effective squadron. Of course that means you have fewer squadrons to work with and have to choose your ops carefully. Neither side can be everywhere, every turn.

It might help those that have to say which version of the game it is and is it a stock scenario and add a pic or two.

Not a scenario I've ever played but I have the first turn open.

1. The Guadalcanal scenario doesn't have 300 turns? Starts on the 6 Aug 42 and ends 7 Feb 43. The Junyou, nor Hiyou, nor Chitose are not in the stock scenario.

2. The point of entry for air and ground units is mostly Truk, Rabaul or Werak. None arrive directly on the canal.

3=4 It's possible the scripts have never been updated to take account of the many game changes that have occured. This will give a AI huge problems

5. To reapir ships you need to send them back to Japan. There should be an option to do that when the ships are in Truk.

6. Don't know without a pic but I'd say you're out of ac but from the Coral Sea scen the Japanese replacements are poor at best.

7. Not really sure what you mean by wings. Are you referring to an air group or all ac ant a base? You may have have no aviation support at a base. This cause all aircraft can become damaged.

8. Pass

From the description of your woes it looks like any of the following.

But my best guess is variying the start. This could but ships past the end date or bring in ships never meant to be in it with unknown results.

Possible corrpted saves.

Now that some of you mentioned, yeah, why hasn't the scenario ended? I'm in May now. I just never got a "Scenario Over" message saying whether I lost or won, so my mind never processed that, well, the game should have been over by now. For the game version, I just downloaded and installed all of the provided files after I bought the game in early August. Windowed version says (1.8.11.27.2), but I have installed the 1126a and 1127Beta as well.

Possibly a corrupt save, yes. As I do have Chitose in my fleet for some reason, she's just there, in Truk, chilling. But now that we're talking about it, I wonder how long I can extend this scenario for.

Also, I just found out another glitch, Kirishima and Shoukaku just repaired their major damages after I gave the AI control, not only them, but a few other CAs, CLs, Makigumo, and Akizuki as well.

But I do thank you all for the imputs and sharing your knowledge with me. Especially on the air groups (I'll still call them Air Wings because I'm a filthy HOI4 nerd) support thingy, and the varied arrival times.

For now, I'm gonna try and extend this scenario as far as it can go and see if there's any change. Let's see if we can get Yamato and Essex in Guadalcanal, lol

We've had a few Hearts of Iron fans show up and stay a while over the years. :D I played the first HOI years ago but haven't been back since getting pulled into WitP.

I will give you some free advice. The AI cheats and does not necessarily follow the rules. So the AI can repair damage without the required shipyards and so on.

ARs should only fix 5 points of major damage or less.

Most of the scenarios don't end per se. Meaning, you can keep playing for as long as you like. However, there won't be any new units coming in beyond those that are in the queue, and the only way to add units to the queue at that point is if you manually add them (LCU's and Air Groups that were destroyed can sometimes be bought back with PP's), but you won't get any new ships (unless the scenario designer made an oops and left some in the queue).

I'm not sure if units sent off map will return after the scenario end date ... that portion of the code has never been discussed that I know of, so unless you test it, we will never know.

1. If you have installed the original game and then ONE of the patches, it should work. If you installed multiple patches they can interfere with each other, particularly the NEW, IN-TESTING BETA 1127.2. That would be like a corrupted download. You need a separate install for each version of the game.

2. AFAIK, the 1127 BETA is an update of the GRAND CAMPAIGN ONLY. It does not include the small scenarios (last I heard). Use the 1126a or 1126B version and select the short scenarios. Read the descriptions carefully for info like "Production is OFF" and "Ships cannot be sent off-map for repairs".
