Navigating Between Multiple Scenarios in Mods: How Can I Improve the Clarity of Radius and Line Map?

Post by GuidoFernando »

I’ve been using a tool in a mod that has a feature allowing me to draw circles on a map. The tool calculates and displays both the radius and area of the circle, which is really useful when trying to understand distances in different mods or scenarios. If the radius is less than 1000 meters, it shows the radius in meters and miles, and when it exceeds 1000 meters, it switches to kilometers and miles. The area is also calculated and displayed in square kilometers and square miles. I find this feature very handy, but I’m encountering some challenges when switching between scenarios, and I’m hoping for advice from others who have used it more extensively.

One thing I’ve noticed while playing is that switching between mods or scenarios with different terrain or objectives sometimes creates confusion, especially with large or small maps. For example, when I'm on a larger map, the radius being shown in kilometers is perfect for getting a good sense of distance. But when the radius drops below 1000 meters, the tool switches to meters and miles, and I sometimes find this change jarring. I understand the need to use smaller units for smaller distances, but personally, it interrupts my flow when the tool switches to miles, as I’m more used to thinking in terms of kilometers for both small and large distances. This leads me to constantly convert miles back to kilometers in my head, which can slow me down, especially when I’m trying to act quickly within a scenario.

Does anyone else have this issue? Or am I just too accustomed to thinking only in metric? What I’m wondering is whether there’s a way to keep the distance display consistent (either always metric or always imperial) so that I don’t have to mentally switch between the two. I’d love to hear from anyone who has found a workaround for this or has tips on how to get more comfortable with switching between the units.

Another aspect I’ve been thinking about is the use of the area display. It’s great that it shows both square kilometers and square miles, but I rarely need to know the area of the circle for most scenarios. Instead, I find myself focusing more on the distance between two points. This brings me to an idea that I’ve been positively inspired by—using a line map feature more prominently instead of just relying on the circle tool. A line map could allow me to draw direct lines between key points in the mod or scenario, giving a more intuitive sense of distances between objectives, rather than estimating it through the area of a circle. For those who may not be familiar, a line map is a tool that allows you to "draw straight lines and measure distance on maps." This method is particularly useful when you want to determine the exact distance between two specific points without needing to calculate the radius of a circle or estimate through area measurements. I feel like this would add another layer of functionality, especially for those like me who are trying to measure distances between two key points, rather than thinking about an entire area. Has anyone else found this approach useful?

I also sometimes encounter an issue where the displayed radius is either too small or too large to be useful in certain scenarios. For instance, when I’m dealing with more confined spaces, like urban or indoor mods, the tool often shows distances that don’t feel quite as relevant, even though the calculations are correct. I realize this is more of a personal preference, but I wonder if there’s a way to adjust the tool to make it more mod-specific. For example, in a cityscape mod, maybe the tool could automatically adjust the circle radius based on the size of buildings or streets, rather than using a generic distance that applies to all scenarios. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels like the tool could be tailored more to specific mod environments, depending on what kind of space you’re working in.

In the end, I’m not looking for the tool to change completely, as it’s clearly designed to be versatile across different types of mods and scenarios. But I think there’s room for improvement in how it adapts to different environments, particularly with the transition between metric and imperial units and how the tool could use a line map for better distance tracking. I’d love to know if anyone has tips on how to adjust their gameplay to these shifts in the tool, or if you’ve come up with creative ways to handle these transitions that could help smooth out the experience.

Would appreciate any feedback or thoughts on this!
